He had a profound impact on my career in Vietnam. I had great confidence in every word he spoke

Was recently made aware of his passing. Commanded a company in his battalion in Hawaii in the 1960s where he suggested I go to flight school. A decision for which I am eternally grateful. I again served in his aviation group in Vietnam. Al Post was an unassuming polished professional officer who readily helped young officers develop. Camille and I are saddened by his passing.

Men who served our country; deserving of recognition on This July 4th. Major General Alton G. Post died March 2, 2020, age of 99.
He served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam. It was in Vietnam that he influenced me toward an Army career. At the time I had no interest in serving my 2 years; actually only 20 months in 1971 as the war began to wind down a Christmas break had been announced. He was the USARV DCSMAT and I was Chief of USARVICCV Finance Division. I briefed him often. We also ran into each other on an outside basketball court at lunch. He played shirtless, rank-less, and relentless.
One day he asked me about my education and when I told him about Accounting and Economics, he said he wanted me and CPT Gil Frisbie to develop a model of drawing down logistics in Vietnam. I didn't have a clue and didn't care, because I was going home in about 3 weeks. He called somebody somewhere and told me a week later that approval had been obtained to extend my tour, but I would have to agree to it. I succumbed to my pride and agreed.
Gil and I worked it and briefed USARV CG and GEN Creighton Abrams. Abrams only turned and told MG Post to get it published in "your Logistics Journal". Gil and I cringed at putting it in print and the time involved. But it made the Army Logistics Magazine in 1972.
During that time MG Post convinced me to remain in the Army for one more year and use that time to look for a job and he would be a reference. A couple of months after returning home and assigned to Fort Lee, some Colonel whose name I don't remember, called me into my office and said a Regular Army Commission had been approved. He was surprised as the Army was actually trying to reduce the number of captains. My pride took over and the rest of the story was 27 years in the Army. Gil Frisbie later said he knew it all the time.
It was men like Alton Post somehow appear in your life as some guiding force or mentor that changes ones direction in life. He was mine. He lived nearly a century, 1920-2020. I'm sure he had an impact on many others.
