Alton Eugene Wallace

June 25, 1973 - May 18, 2025

Alton Eugene Wallace, 51, passed away at sea on May 18, 2025, while heading out clamming-doing what he loved most, being on the ocean.

Born in Machias, Maine, on June 25, 1973, to Jimmy and Cindy Wallace, Alton lived a life deeply connected to the ocean. A true son of the Maine coast, he made his living from the sea as a lobsterman, clammer, eeler, scallop dragger, and boat builder. His hands told the story of a man who worked hard, loved deeply, and lived fully. Alton was a man who could build or fix anything, always finding a way. He was larger than life-strong, capable, and filled with wisdom that left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Alton was a devoted family man whose greatest pride was his children. His eyes always smiled when he spoke of them, and he passed on his strong work ethic and deep respect for the ocean to each of them-every one having spent time on the back of his lobster boat, learning not just a trade, but his legacy. Alton taught all three of his children the value of hard work, always making it a family affair-whether they were out lobster fishing, hunting, or tackling any task together.

Alton also had a deep love for sports and competition, especially the game of softball-a passion he proudly passed on to his children. If one of them had an event, you could count on Alton to be there, cheering them on from the sidelines with pride in his heart and a smile on his face.

In addition to his life on the water, Alton was an avid hunter. Every November, he brought home a record buck-each with a story better than the last. Hunting was more than a sport for Alton; it was a cherished tradition, a source of joy, and a way to connect with those he loved. In recent years, his greatest passion became guiding and teaching the next generation, passing down not only the skills but the deep appreciation he held for the woods. Countless memories were made during those times, and his hunting stories will live on for generations to come.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 29 years, Alison. Together they built a loving life filled with adventures and a strong family, consisting of their three children: Beth (Sam), Ceanna (Landon), and Carlton. Alton was thrilled at the upcoming arrival of his granddaughter, Allie Mae, whom he had already grown to love. His loyal dogs, Duke and Buddy, were never far from his side. He is also survived by his parents, Jimmy and Cindy; grandmother Rose; sisters, Juanita (Cary) and Sheila (Kevin); and nephews, Nevin (Heather) and Cody. He was predeceased by his brother in law, William "Billy" Height, Jr.

Alton will be missed by his mother- and father-in-law, Dale and Janet; his sisters-in-law, Karen (Rob) and Alicia (Jamie); niece, Lindsey; and his special uncle Levi. He also leaves behind many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and his extended fishing family at Chipman's Wharf.

A celebration of Alton's legacy will be held on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Jordan Pier in Milbridge, followed by a Boat Parade to Foster's Island in his honor.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alton's memory to the Alton E. Wallace Scholarship Fund at Bar Harbor Bank and Trust, P.O. Box 116, Milbridge, ME 04658.

We are deeply grateful to the Marine Patrol, private drones and plane operators, our dedicated local fishermen, and to our community who searched tirelessly to help bring Alton home. Your efforts and compassion will never be forgotten.

Alton's life was guided by the tides and the seasons, his heart was anchored in family, and his legacy will forever live on in the waves, the woods, and in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
