Alvin B. Rosenberg
February 26, 1925 – January 24, 2013
The Honourable Mr. Justice Alvin B. Rosenberg Q. C., B.Sc., LL.B., died in his home among family on January 24th, 2013. He will be deeply missed by his wife Gloria, seven children and their spouses, thirteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one enormous Bernese Mountain Dog.
Alvin was dedicated to the law. He graduated from Osgoode Hall, followed his father as senior partner in the law firm of Rosenberg, Smith, Walsh, Paton and was appointed Queen's Counsel. A leader in the field of condominium law, he was the author of the first comprehensive text on that subject in Canada, as well as numerous other legal publications. In 1983 he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Ontario, where he sat as a judge for sixteen years. He then joined ADR Chambers Inc. and worked as a mediator and arbitrator until January 2009.
Alvin was passionate about humanitarian endeavours. He was chairman of the board of Mount Sinai Hospital and served on the hospital executive committee for 40 years. He served twice as chairman of the United Jewish Appeal. For over 50 years he supported Plan Canada sponsoring more than 250 foster children.
He was a founder of York Racquets tennis club. He loved bridge and took great joy on the day he died to have made seven spades while partnered with his son.
In spite of all these accomplishments he was a humble and unassuming man who was happiest in the sunshine at Georgian Bay. Alvin was eccentric, free-thinking, with an enormous intellectual curiosity. He had a brilliant mind and a generous heart.
A private service was held Sunday, January 27th, 2013. Shiva will be held from 2-5 p.m. Monday, January 28th.

I was a small kid visiting one of the rare times I was able to at Alvin's house that was across the street from upper Canada college. I found it Unusual that this iconic man was cleaning up water from a flood in his pool room while stepping on towels to absorb up the water and wearing quite nice shoes while doing so. I'm proud to Be extended family to Alvin.

His memory is a blessing.
