On behalf of the Employment Equity and Multiculturalism networks at CIDA, I wish to express our condolences to family and all friends. Along with his distinguished professional credentials, Aly devoted selflessly of his time and his passion to making a better workplace for his colleagues, notably as a champion of employment equity within CIDA and the Canadian public service and for his organization of CIDA's talent night.

I'm sorry to hear of Aly's passing. I'll never forget how he took the time to mentor me as a new CIDA employee many years ago while working on the Pakistan/Afghanistan program. He was always very helpful and great to work with.

I had studied with Dr. Shady in Italy in 1967. He had the sharpest mind and was always a faithful friend. I have posted some of our photos together in Italy in the photo gallery for those who knew him then. I mourn his departure and wish his family in Canada and in Egypt patience. He was a great man.

Jeannie:
I know how much you love your father, and I know how devastating the loss of him is to you!
Your Dad was a man of many achievements, but his crowning achievement, to him, was his family and his faith. He lived his faith, facing all his joys, his trials, his tribulations, his relationships, his work, -- his life and the end of his life, through the eyes of his faith. For this reason, the merciful God will, in all His justice, grant your Dad the eternal peace of the angels, and, be He willing, grant you peace and the acceptance of His will.
With love, and in His Peace,
Bob Grimes.

The world today is definitely poorer without Aly Shady, because he was truly a citizen of the world by what he achieved and for whom he lived. May Allah rest his soul in peace

Dear Jeannie and Anissa,
I'm so sorry for your loss. Aly was a great mentor and friend to many at CIDA, but especially so for those who were just starting their careers.
His encouragement and sage advice have benefitted so many, myself included. As I work with my own new recruits, I will strive to impart Aly's teachings/gifts on a daily basis.

Aly always put others in the limelight, but it was his brilliance that made them shine. I will miss his mischievous smile, his keen mind, and generous friendship. Aly was a visionary, often not appreciated as he should have been, but in the final accounting he was one who made a difference in this world.

I am so sad to hear of Aly's passing. We worked together on the Afghanistan file and he was so respected by his peers. I didn't know him well but it was very clear how proud he was of his 2 daughters. Rset in peace, Aly
