Amarjit Singh Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 6, 2024.
Amarjit Singh of Dearborn, Michigan left her temporal body and sought journey to WaheGuru's embrace on May 1, 2024. She was 82 and had enjoyed the grace of a lifetime of good health and a strong mind. She was surrounded by her husband, daughters and sons-in-law. Amar is survived by her husband of 56 years, Harkrishan, and her daughters and their husbands: Mona (Randeep Kahlon) and Amrita (Binesh Patel), and her adored grandchildren: Arjan and Amanrai Kahlon, Simreen and Navtaj Patel. She is also survived by her sisters, Satwant Sehgal, Dolly Setia and brother Sutinder Singh Arora. Her cherished sisters Raminder, Sharan and brother Manmohan preceded her in death.

Amar was born on August 20, 1941 in Amritsar Punjab, India to her beloved parents Prem Singh Arora and Gian Kaur. She was raised in Tarn Taran in the proximity of an exquisite Gurdwara. Her early life was filled with laughter, faith and music. Each family member played an instrument or learned to sing–Amar was trained in classical tanpura and sitar. She received a B.A. from Amritsar Govt College and B.A. Education from Khalsa College, and taught high school Political Science. She was an inspirational teacher but also popular for her elegant saris and beehive hair. In 1967, she married Harkrishan Singh and after a honeymoon in Germany settled into a new adventure in Detroit, where she made her home for 56 years. She often said her parents told her she was destined to be an American. She was a proud Michigander who only drove Ford vehicles.

While Amar worked outside the home in real estate and banking for short periods of time, she was a feminist who believed in making one's own life choices and embraced a love of decorating, sewing, reading and being a wife and mother. Amar watched the news daily and was an avid stock day-trader, often besting Harkrishan's returns. She was excited to work the phone bank and vote for Hillary Clinton for President. She enjoyed traveling and picking up books and objet d'art to commemorate the cultures she visited. Amar raised her daughters by example: to value intellectual and artistic pursuits, to be a true and loyal friend, to love children with a full and patient heart. She valiantly tried to teach her daughters and their friends to cook–with mixed results.

Amar will be remembered for her open heart, love for WaheGuru (God), and dedication to the Sikh values of Remember God's name, Work Diligently and Honestly, Share with Others. She was soft-spoken yet strong of spirit and sure of her path, which balanced her husband's extroverted personality. She was immensely empathetic and always ready to help or provide moral support.

Amar was intensely proud of and deeply loved her nieces, nephews and her sons-in–law, who she thought of as her own children. Her four grandchildren gave her unbounding joy and new cause for worry. She embraced the role of "Nanima," writing them cards, teaching them to pray, writing inscriptions in books she bought them, keeping mementos of their accomplishments, keeping them up way past bedtime, and recommending Netflix shows. They will all miss her singing, her stories, and her making kara parshad and poori chole.

Visitation for Amarjit will be held Saturday, May 11th from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 with Shabad Kirtan and Remembrance Service at 10:45 a.m. at McCabe Funeral Home, 851 N. Canton Center Rd., Canton. Afterwards, all are invited to attend Gurudwara services at Mata Tripta Gurudwara (Hidden Falls) located at 40600 Schoolcraft Road, Plymouth, Michigan. Langar (community lunch) will follow.

Amar loved all children. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Starfish Family Services, a Detroit-based non-profit focused on supporting early childhood health and education, are appreciated. https://www.starfishfamilyservices.org/make-a-donation/

Once, after finishing dance class at Amar Aunty´s house, I discovered our parents all together, having chai and snacks and laughing about things I didn´t understand. But it was so sweet seeing 4 friends, almost like a 1970s Hindi movie; I didn´t even realize my parents had friends until then! Seeing them laughing and chatting together, and Amar Aunty so elegantly replacing empty cups with more chai and adding snacks to the table while not even looking like it, staying engaged in the conversation with her friends, well that was the kind of grace, generosity, and friendship I always held as the bar of who I hoped to become like someday. Thinking about her really warms my heart. She was always so kind and encouraging, and my entire family and I will miss her so dearly.

She is a beautiful woman with style, grace and class. I enjoyed the time with Amrita and aunty learning to cook Indian food. Even though your mother is no longer here ...you will always feel her love. My sincere condolences to the entire family, Sobha

I remember meeting Amar Aunty almost 40 years ago when I began dancing with Mona and Mita. Over the years, she has been such a guiding light for me as an example of a graceful loving nurturing mother raising such empowered sweet thoughtful intelligent daughters. I always looked up to her. My fondest memory of her was during a cooking class she offered to us so we e could learn some simple recipes for our kids. May your soul rest in peace as I know your spirit will forever be watching over your children and grandchildren.

When I was younger, my Mom would let me visit Mona and Mita over the weekends, which was always the best thing ever. This started in Middle School and through High School. Amar Aunty was very much a part of raising me and always showered me with smiles and hugs. She was fair, kind, and loving. She inspired me as a stay at home Mom and later when she was working in real estate. She taught us Girls about self respect and taking care of ourselves, as well as respecting others (being open minded/nonjudgmental). She even took care of me during challenging times when I would wake up at night, being asthmatic. I very much loved her and I will miss her.

I got to fortune to get to know your mother this past Thanksgiving and her soft manner and strong spirit were so evident in the way she confidently sat next to her husband and pleased us with lovely conversation. I did feel like I already knew her from your stories about her and the beautiful photos from your birthday party: I feel so lucky to have met her: Her sweet smile and strength are so evident in you Amrita, I have no doubt her legacy will leave through in the future generations.

Watching Amar mom with her grandkids was like watching best friends hang out. Whether it was playing a game, reading books, or telling stories. She had a way of making everyone at ease while ensuring everyone was taken care of.
