Amy Allison Steele Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 22 to Jan. 23, 2023.
Amy Allison Steele, born November 21st, 1955 in Massachusetts, was a beloved spouse, mother, sister and friend, and oh, so much more!

Amy had a lifelong passion for the arts. Amy enjoyed her time singing in the Longmeadow High School choir in Massachusetts and later earned a degree in arts from Skidmore College in New York. She taught fine arts at Andover Academy and the American School in Singapore, where she encouraged adolescents to discover themselves through art. In her later years, she became an extraordinary felter who was known for her hats, rings, and dresses.

Professionally, Amy spent years in the association business, first with IRSA (International Racquet & Sportsclub Association) and later with NSAA (National Ski Areas Association) as Director of Sponsorships. She was famous for her incredible annual parties, glow-stick necklaces, and her fun phone calls.

Amy was a proud mother of George, Allison, and Suzanne, and a loving spouse to Dr. Andy Steele. She was also a dedicated dog mom to Boomer and MollyLu. Amy filled her life with singing in community choirs, creating felted art, listening to classical/jazz/broadway music, walking her dogs, and hiking with her family in the mountains of Colorado. At every party, Amy was the first to light up the dance floor. She was an avid adventurer, traveling solo around the world in her twenties and later taking her family to countless countries. She had a wide circle of friends, including those she met through her time in Boston, traveling, parenting, professional careers, singing, felting, and dancing.

Amy danced with the ebbs and flows of ovarian cancer for the last two years of her life. A staunch advocate for women's health and rights, she found great support from fellow members of COCA (Colorado Ovarian Cancer Association) and discovered a love for acupuncture. She confidently and compassionately chose to die under the MAiD (Medical Aid in Dying) process.

Amy died on January 19th, 2023 surrounded by her family in her home in Denver, CO. She was 67 years old. She is survived by her husband Andy Steele, and her three children George Steele (30), Allison Steele (29), and Suzanne Steele (27), her mother Ginia Allison, and her older siblings Stephen Allison and Perry Allison.

Although we will miss her dearly, we are grateful for the love, laughter, and memories that Amy brought into our lives. In true Amy fashion, in lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider donating to any of the following causes in her memory:

Planned Parenthood - www.plannedparenthood.org

Colorado Ovarian Cancer Association - www.colo-ovariancancer.org

Medical Aid in Dying - www.acamaid.org

A service to celebrate Amy's life will be held in late spring.

This is heartbreaking news. Amy was my partner in crime at NSAA in the early 2000s. She was fun, creative and quirky as well as encouraging, caring and incredibly perceptive. I can still hear her bright, happy voice singing "Amy Steele!" when she answered her phone. Sincerest condolences to Andy and the kids-you were her pride and joy.

To the wonderful family of Amy Allison Steele: I was saddened by the news of Amy´s passing. I considered her a friend and business associate. I always spent time visiting with her at each NSAA Trade Show. Her latest fashion statement was noticed long before you engaged Her in conversation. That beaming smile and her endearing personality served her well.
When Amy learned that I had spent my early business career in the fashion industry, we instantly bonded. I always looked forward to seeing her and chatting about her latest outfit. She would often say, "what do think." Amy exhibited a charm that was compelling and well suited to her various careers. Reading her life´s sketch is exactly who Amy was! She was intelligent, magnetic, caring and expressed great love for her family. We often spoke about about our families when we visited. She will be missed.

Amy was my favorite camp counselor at Aloha! We had the quirkiest tent family you could imagine, and through humor, acceptance and love, she gelled us into the tightest little unit, and gave us a happy haven from the growing pains of adolescence. I´m so sorry to hear she is gone.
