DANITA HINGSTON Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Jan. 26 to Jan. 30, 2016.
Danita Hingston (nee Mongovius)
At the young age of 57, after a complex, difficult and short battle with cancer, Danita Hingston, beloved wife of Doug Hingston, passed into the arms of her saviour Jesus Christ on January 23, 2016. She was surrounded by her loving family on her final journey. Danita worked at Maple Leaf Foods (Intercon) for 33 years. She was a proud union member of UFCW Local 248P and strong volunteer for several charities. Her passion to serve others was evident in the countless hours she committed to human services through the work of UFCW Canada Local 1400; in particular the Women's Council. She also fervently supported the NDP locally and nationally working tirelessly on many election campaigns. She had a singing voice like an angel; was a self-taught magical seamstress; graduate of Labour Relations U of S as Valedictorian, loved vacations in BC, Mexico and especially their new 32' trailer in the Cozy Creek RV Park by Spiritwood; hosted many family gatherings; best story-teller and card player; and enjoyed the Roughriders. Danita was predeceased by her father, William Mongovius. She is survived by her husband Doug Hingston; mother Ethel Mongovius; 6 sisters Shirley McVittie (Greg Wawryk), Arlene Mongovius (Archie La Rocque), Nancy Zimmerman, Melinda Brown (Cam Brown), Lesley Anne Gough (Garfield Gough) and Angela Lazorko-Mongovius (Brian Lazorko); her best friend Sheila Mattes; 10 nieces and nephews and a large extended family. Danita's kind and gentle soul, infectious smile, generous spirit, and "stand up for yourself" attitude will be remembered by all who knew her. She is missed already. Thank you to the Saskatoon Cancer Centre and RUH 6100 for trying to get her miracle. Funeral Service and Celebration of Danita's Life will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. from Acadia-McKague's Funeral Centre (915 Acadia Dr., Saskatoon, SK, 306-955-1600); for parking enquiries, please call. The family requests flowers and condolences to please be sent to Acadia- McKague's Funeral Centre.

So sorry to hear of Danita's passing. We didn't know Danita well though know of her commitment and passion for our province's wellbeing through various labour and political efforts. And, we recall, not so long ago, the love of family and singing at her sister's retirement gathering. Darn it, why do the good ones have to leave us so early?! - Lenore and Kelley

Such a heavy heart today for the loss of a dear lady. Even though we didn't see much of each other I loved the way you lit up and smiled when we would run into you somewhere. You made everyone feel special but it was always you who was the special one. So sad for Doug, your Mom and all your beautiful sisters at this time. Your faith has taken you to a place in the stars and the love of family and friends will keep your memory alive always.

My heart is reaching out to Doug and all of Danita's family and friends. Danita was a true Sister in the trade union movement. She could be tough and comforting. She could be serious and funny. She was always principled and committed to creating a better world for everyone. I will be in Saskatoon for the Labour Council AGM next weekend. It will not be the same without Danita's physical presence; however I know her spirit will be there challenging us and supporting us to do the best we can for our members and so many others in our communities. Danita will be part of a "new union choir" now; and will be teaching the angels some great songs! We miss you and love you Danita. We will carry on your work in your honour. I offer you my thoughts, prayers and well-wishes during this dark time in your life. The whole world got a little darker the moment her light went out. The love, admiration and respect I felt for Danita was almost as big as the heart she herself carried. My own heart breaks for your loss Doug.

Danita was an inspiration and a true union activist. She made me feel so welcomed at my first SFL union training and took my fears of being awkward and unsure away. She will be missed by the members of her sister union, SGEU and will be in our hearts and memories forever.
