Amy Kawazoe Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 23, 2023.
Amy Aiko Kawazoe died peacefully on March 16, 2023 in Portland, OR, three weeks after being diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia. She was 35 years old. Amy was the wife of Daniel Bigelow and mother of Charles Takeru Bigelow, both of Corvallis, OR. She and Dan were expecting a second child, Louis George Bigelow, who was lost in February at the start of her illness.

Amy is survived by her mother Robin (Inada) Kawazoe of Bethesda, MD, father and stepmother Howard and Cheryl Kawazoe of Southern Pines, NC, brother Steven Kawazoe of Bethesda, MD, and a little dog named Maeby. Amy is further remembered by countless aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, and friends.

Born and raised in Rockville, MD, Amy graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 2009. She most recently lived in Corvallis, OR, having moved from Bozeman, MT with Dan and Charlie in 2022. Prior to living in Bozeman, Amy spent eight years working in the biopharmaceutical industry, residing in Washington, DC, Baltimore, MD, and Salem, MA, as well as an earlier stint in Corvallis, OR.

Amy found her greatest source of happiness in watching Charlie grow and discover the world. She was a devoted mother who loved reading to him, taking him to the playground and museum, and cooking with him. Apart from spending time with her son, Amy enjoyed traveling, particularly to Europe, fine dining, fashion, playing with her dogs, and attending music and comedy shows. Amy's sharp wit and dry sense of humor remained intact until the end.

A private celebration of Amy's life will be held on April 15, 2023 in Bethesda, MD. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute or The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

I am so sorry for the loss of Amy I heard so many great stories about the special life adventures that Dan, Amy and Charlie had together. Such sad news.

Amy, our beautiful daughter-in-law.
The first time Amy came to our home, she brought chocolate -and if you know us, that won our hearts.

The past weeks have been surreal. Tears are shed and there are so many questions that all start with "why"

Amy had a quiet, but strong presence. She was dignified, composed and confident. Amy was smart, and insightful. She had class. Amy was a defender of human rights and a respectful listener. It was always interesting to hear Amy's "quips" and perspectives on current happenings.

Amy was incredibly funny. She was sharp-witted. She laughed and engaged with the shenanigans of our/her large, loud, extended family, and she contirbuted to the fun with her clever humor.

Amy was incredibly supportive of Dan as he pursued, what I am sure seemed like, his never- ending education. Amy traveled and lived across the country to align with Dan's education and career opportunities We are so grateful that Dan had Amy's strength and her love.

Amy was the best mom. She loved Charlie and her devotion and dedication to her little boy is evident. Charlie's sweet personlaity is in Amy's image. I once told Dan, how much I loved Charlie's demeanor , and he said "it is all Amy".

Amy, we will suport Dan and take care of Charlie .

Amy you are so loved and will always be in our hearts. We will make sure Charlie knows how much you love him.

Rest in peace with baby Louis. You will be so missed. xox

I just heard the devastating news. I am so, so sorry. Amy was a true bright light in a too often dark world. The love, joy, and kindness Amy brought to everyone will never be forgotten. May the love of God envelope all of you during this most difficult time.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

Howard, Cheryl and Robin,

I am so sorry for your loss. I was devastated when I read your email. I had no idea Amy was diagnosed with leukemia or that she was carrying her second child. We are all thinking of you.
