Mr. Medard Albert Huys

Medard "Shorty" Huys passed away Thursday, Sept 2, 2010 in Assiniboia, Sk, at the age of 93.

Medard was born May 18, 1917 in Deloraine, MB. The family moved to LaFleche when Medard was quite young and then settled in the Leeville district. Medard spent many years farming with his father, and then alone, until he married Estella in 1965. Medard moved his young family to the farm ½ mile south of Assiniboia in 1976. He farmed with his son Louis for many years, and farmed the home quarter until he moved into town at the age of 80.

Medard was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks. He was a councillor for RM 72 Lake of the Rivers, and a member of the Thomson Lake board for many years. Medard donated blood twice a year to the Red Cross until age limitation. He taught firearm safety for 25 years, and was an avid hunter and fisher.

Medard loved children. Being single for many years, he was the "favourite" uncle to countless nephews and nieces before his own children came along, the first being born when he was 49. Medard could not wait to become a grandfather, and had to wait until he was 78 before the first grandchild was born. He loved teasing them and never hesitated getting on the floor to play with them.

Medard is survived by his wife of 45 years, Estella (Desanghere) and their children Marianne (Dave) Schneider, Rose-Marie (Paul) Dornstauder, Louis (Tawnya Rich) and Michael; seven grandchildren: Christopher and Elizabeth Dornstauder, Aleah and Jackie Schneider, Sydney, Jayla and Rylee Huys; sisters Marie Demers, Dora (Malcom) Workman, brother Gerard "Slim" (Joy) Huys. Medard was predeceased by parents Louis and Pharidia Huys; siblings Clara Nachtegaele, Margaret Desanghere, Cryil Huys, Marcel Huys, Art Huys, Gus Huys.

Prayer Vigil was held September 6, 2010, with Sister Margo Hamel officiating and the Funeral Mass was celebrated September 7, 2010 with Monsignor Ken Miller celebrant; both services held at St. George's Roman Catholic Church. Interment followed at Mount Hope Cemetery, Assiniboia. Arrangements entrusted to Ross Funeral Service, Assiniboia, Sk.
