Anderson “Andy” George Oldham
April 18, 1964 – January 15, 2016
Andy Oldham, beloved husband, son, father and brother, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, January 15, 2016.
Andy was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on April 18, 1964, to Katie and Bob Oldham. As Bob Oldham served in the Navy, Andy grew up moving throughout the country. This upbringing developed in him an ease in adjusting to new situations and making fast friendships.
Andy and his two brothers, Bryan and Brad, bonded over sports. Bryan remembers fondly that Andy taught him to play baseball. Brad noted that Andy was “Ten years older & always ten years ahead of me, protecting all along the way.”
Andy graduated from North Chicago High School in 1982 where he was MVP of his high school baseball team in his senior year. He carried that love of baseball – both participating and rooting for his favorite teams – Senators, Cubs, Mariners, Diamondbacks and Nationals, throughout the rest of his life. He experienced great joy playing softball for the church league while attending Westside Presbyterian Church in Seattle.
It was while living in the Waukegan, Illinois area and on the shores of Lake Michigan that Andy gave his life over to Jesus. This commitment to his Lord was the defining characteristic of the remainder of his life.
In 1987, Andy graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. Andy had a lifelong passion with history and was always reading to learn more. His favorite quote, from Edmund Burke was, “Those who don’t know history, are destined to repeat it.” Winston Churchill was his hero and he spent much time delving into his life, career and character. Winston Churchill once said, “We shall draw from the heart of suffering itself the means of inspiration and survival.” These words applied to Andy’s life as he faced life’s challenges and persevered.
His first job out of college was working at Carlin’s Menswear. Andy developed a sharp sense of fashion in this role that he carried with him. Andy then spent the next 12 years working in the healthcare industry. Finally he left that industry and worked the remainder of his life in his dream industry – golf.
Andy had a daughter, Julia Catherine, from his first marriage to Santa Barbaro. Julia, an elementary school teacher in Maryland, was a source of great joy and pride for Andy. They spent quality time learning and playing golf, attending baseball games, going to the aquarium, and reading C.S. Lewis’ “Chronicles of Narnia.”
In 1994, Andy met Laura Handy. Andy and Laura married on September 22, 1995, in Seattle, Washington, at Westside Presbyterian Church, where they served and worshiped until 2004 when they returned to the Washington, DC, area to assist with end of life care for Andy’s father Bob.
Following their time in DC, Andy and Laura moved first to Miami, Florida, then to Phoenix, Arizona, and then settled in San Diego, California in August 2015 where they had planned to stay until retirement.
Andy and Laura enjoyed going to the movies, traveling, concerts, and worshiping together. Some memorable trips included the Grand Canyon, Hawaii, and an Alaskan cruise.
Andy loved his wife, daughter, family and friends, cats, golf, baseball, movies, contemporary Christian music, reading, traveling, and making people laugh. While Andy’s life seemed to have been cut short, he knew God and trusted that He had numbered his days appropriately. We will miss his smile, his gentle nature, his warm heart.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the American Heart Association.

Julia,
I am very sorry for your loss. I lost my dad when he was 56, and I still miss him. You do look very much like him. It was nice to see his photograph. I am sure there are other of his qualities you also share, and which you will keep alive, and may even, as I do now, see in your own children.
God bless,
Angie

It is with a sad heart we say good bye to Andy. Really one of the nicest people I had the pleasure to be around. He never had a discouraging word to say about anyone. Always there to lend a hand. I remember he took me to the Airport and we had a great conversation about baseball and golf and our working conditions (Good of course) and we laughed a lot.
GO with God Andy and rest easy.

Andy was one of my most favorite Assistant Golf Professionals. He was very conscientious and big hearted. Andy worked very hard to make sure that every golfer had a great experience when they arrived at the golf course. He was certainly the kindest sole I have ever been able to call my friend.

Laura,
We were shocked and saddened to hear of Andy's passing. We knew him through the pro shop and we were fortunate to play golf with him once. He gave me so many helpful tips for improving my golf game so we took him over to the Blue Agave to thank him for his help. It was fun getting to know him. We were certainly hopeful that we would hear from you two when you were in Alaska on your cruise but it wasn't meant to be. Know that you and your family and of course Andy are in our prayers. What a fine person he was!

Laura,
Jim and I met Andy the day we found a house in Trilogy 5 years ago. It was August (we were going to come in Oct for the winter), but we wanted to find out about the golf course and shop. He was so very helpful and even talked me into a pair of wonderful golf shoes. When we returned in Oct. he remembered us, but of course not our names. However, from that time on, he always addressed us by name!!!
I know you and your family have wonderful memories too.
Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Laura and Family, I worked with Andy at Trilogy in Arizona. We both spent time in Miami and Seattle and shared stories of favorite placed is both areas. He was a great friend, would reach out when he knew you were struggling to include you in something fun. I will always remember fond memories of enjoying a round of golf together, and his professionalism and class in his duties at Trilogy. Everything was always good as long as there were Reese's Peanut Butter Cups stocked in the shop cooler. He was a great man, and a true friend. Please accept my deepest condolences as you process this terrible loss. He was truly a class act and will be greatly missed.

Laura and Oldham Family,
I had the privilege of working with Andy at Trilogy. He was a very kind and generous man. The thing I appreciated most about "Anders" was his determination to get things right. He would sometimes be too hard on himself but ultimately he never gave up on trying to the the best he could be. He could always bring comedic relief to myself and the rest of the team. He will be missed greatly and my family's thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Laura, Julia and Family - Andy and I became good friends while working together at the Trilogy Golf Club at Vistancia. Andy was a true gentleman who always showed great compassion for others. He had the amazing talent of remembering names and greeted everyone who entered the golf shop. Andy purchased donuts every Tuesday for the Men's Club and always saved a pink-frosted donut for me, which I would find carefully tucked in my drawer. I will always remember and cherish Andy's kindness and our many conversations. Rest in peace, dear friend.

Dear Oldham family,
I am sorry for your loss. It is never easy to lose a loved one, regardless if they have lived a full life. One thing I will say is that "WE" should be happy and allow our God to take his son into his care where he will forever be at peace. When you become sad just remember this; the love and laughter he shared with all of you will live in you forever. My sincerest condolences to you and your families. May God help you find peace and strength to get through this trying time. With all due respect.

I loved walking into the pro shop and have Andy greet me with a warm, good morning Ron. Andy's gifts were many but the one that caught my attention was he could remember names. He often would ask me to pray for him, his family members or friends. His faith was strong an unwavering. He was always concerned that things be done right, but maybe not the easiest way. I am sadden to learn of his death but so grateful to have know Andy.

I think I met you both when you bid on cat sitting for the youth auction at West Side Pres Church twenty or so years ago? It meant so much you supporting our teens going to Juarez Mexico to help build a house. I enjoyed getting to know your cats, however briefly, and still think so highly of you both--your kindness and zest for life and happiness together. At a loss for words Laura, but know how much I care. Linda Layman, Seattle, WA

It was such a pleasure to see Andy when at the Pro Shop at Trilogy at Vistancia. He was always so welcoming, with a smile on his face, and his personal greeting to everyone. It was a loss to see him leave Trilogy. He will be missed, as he touched so many lives in a positive manner.

Laura, I never had the pleasure of meeting Andy personally but I feel like I knew him. I always saw your posts about being with your best friend, and the pictures of him showed such a kind and sweet face. You were blessed to be with him, but he was blessed also to be with you. Your time together here was brief, but you will have eternity. Right now my heart breaks for you, but you will meet again.

Dear Laura-
Andy was kind, warm-hearted, and genuine....character traits too often missing in so many men today. Kudos to his parents for raising such a neat person. Andy and I shared a love for the game of golf. He was a pro and I am a "hack". I'll always remember and treasure that day of golf together in Maui when Andy encouraged me to join him to play the Plantation course at Kapalua. I had never played it before and Andy said he got some discounted rate and that we had to tee it up together. I said, "OK, let's do it!" It was a spectacular day and we got in the 18 holes as the sun was setting. I recall Andy played well and I survived with still some golf balls left in my bag. More recently, Jenna and I have come to love Arizona and would escape there for a few weeks in the early Spring. It was special to meet you guys for worship at Pinnacle Peak and catch up on each other over dinner. And then we learned that Andy was the Asst. Pro at the Trilogy at Vistancia not too far from Sun City West, AZ where we have come to enjoy over the last several years. I can still recall seeing Andy behind the counter greeting us and other golfers. He was a Professional in every sense of the word and was in his element on and around the golf course. Know that our lives were enriched having known Andy and counted him and you among our friends. He will be missed. Denny & Jenna Olson, West Seattle
