He was a 1961 graduate of the US Naval Academy. While there, he was cox-swain for the 8 man racing shell that made it to the Olympic trials in 1960. As a member of the pep squad, he also masterminded the theft of the Army's mascot mule, and its subsequent release at the annual Army Navy game. He watched the game every single year, complete with traditional apple cannonballs and rum hard sauce at the conclusion.
After the USNA, he went into the US Marine Corps and was stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC, where he was head instructor at the NBC School. After suffering a serious knee injury, he left the Corps and went to graduate school. He earned a Master's degree in Math at East Carolina University and did his doctoral work at Clemson. Chateau du Vieux Corbeau winery became the 7th winery in Kentucky and the first legal alcohol in Boyle County since 1945. He served several terms on the State Grape and Wine Council and was chairman of the State Agri-Tourism Commission for 10 years.
He loved entertaining at Christmas with his readings of the 'Cajun Night Before Christmas' and tales of southern Louisiana. He traveled all over Kentucky and surrounding states each year. His reading was a 25 year tradition on Channel 27 on Christmas Eve.
