In Loving Memory of Andre Debonaire McNeal

February 10, 1970 - November 5, 2023

With profound sadness and a deep sense of loss, we announce the passing of Andre Debonaire McNeal, a vibrant soul, loving father, devoted husband, and a pillar of the community, who left this world too soon on November 5, 2023, in Minneapolis, MN.

Born on a chilly winter day in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Susan McNeal, Andre was the youngest spark of mischief and mirth in the family. His youth was marked by a zest for life, seen in his love for Boy Scouts, baseball, and the joyous pranks he played. Despite his spirited nature, Andre was top of his class-a testament to his disciplined and studious mindset.

Andre's innate leadership shone early. As a color guard sergeant-at-arms in elementary school, he started community organizing and set the stage for a life dedicated to bringing people together. His teenage years echoed with laughter and music from his backyard parties, revealing a natural-born impresario. High school, Simeon Vocational class of 1988 saw Andre, the innovative party technician, creating inclusive social spaces like The Castle and fostering brotherhood through the Debonair social club.

In the late 1990's Andre moved to the Twin Cities as a young DJ For KMOJ FM radio. His voice, both on-air as the vibrant Debonaire and in person, served as a beacon, calling people to come together, celebrate diversity, and give back to the community. He believed in action; he produced his own radio segment, Bad Boy Radio, where he beseeched people in the community to help out kids in need. His on-air call to "Lay your problems on Andre's Door Step" would later become the inspiration for naming his foundation.

In the early 2000's Andre was instrumental in welcoming new Black professionals who moved here. He had a gift since childhood of creating inviting social environments for all people. His efforts with Bachelor Boy Entertainment fueled and aided Black Professional retention by allowing the community to come out and connect.

His moniker 'Debonaire' was no mere title; it encapsulated the duality of a man who was both compassionate in private and exuberant in public, lifting spirits and challenging his community to strive for greatness. His mentorship of the Den Brothers and the broader community efforts of The Doorstep Foundation, a mentoring and leadership development program for young people stood as a testament to his unyielding dedication to others.

Andre's life was a series of vibrant chapters, from his impromptu and romantic elopement with his wife, Dr. Zakia Robbins-McNeal, to his unwavering commitment to creating opportunities for connection and growth within the Black community in Minnesota.

In his personal battle with health, Andre demonstrated the same tenacity he lived by, managing his diabetes and hypertension with grace and diligence while encouraging others to take care of themselves.

Andre's legacy is etched in the hearts of those he touched, leaving behind a rich tapestry of love, leadership, and community. He departs from this world preceded by his brother Michael, mother Susie Elbert, and daughter Anaja. His spirit lives on through his wife Dr. Zakia Robbins-McNeal, his sons Darius, Jachai, and Andrew, and a loving network of family, friends, and those he mentored.

The Doorstep Foundation, his enduring gift to the world, will continue Andre's mission, launching an annual benefit in his honor starting in 2024, ensuring that the values he championed will flourish and that the lives he touched will continue to be uplifted.

Andre Debonaire McNeal, you were a light that never dimmed, a force for unity, and a heart forever filled with love. May your memory be a blessing and your legacy a guidepost for all who follow.

A public visitation will be held on November 17th from 1:00pm- 6pm at Shiloh Temple 1201 West Broadway Ave. Minneapolis MN 55404

Love you dawg. I´ll never forget you, ever! You were a real role model to me and I was almost close to changing my ways.
I´m sorry dawg, but it´s something about you that made me feel like I had a chance.
I wish you never died - every time I think about the news, I start getting in my feelings.
It hurts like hell.
I hope you´re living a wonderful afterlife, because all of your good deeds you´ve done in your life, I´m sure God loves you!
But for now, I´ll try harder to "turn the problems into progress".
Fly high, Dre

I am deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Andre. He was truly a pillar in our community and made a significant impact on the lives of many, especially young black boys. His dedication and commitment to helping them become better men is truly commendable.

Andre had a special talent for connecting black professionals in our community, creating a network of support and opportunities for growth.

He will be greatly missed. Rest in power, Andre.

When he started doing club nights at Ben Coleman's, he was giving away tickets to see LL Cool J. I had to win a dance contest. He asked me what song should he play. I told him my favorite song at the time. Touch It by Monifa. He played it and they declared me the winner. Nothing but love anytime and everytime we crossed paths. He truly will be missed.

Deb was a man I could call for advice with raising my teenage son. He was always ready with advice to give me and I took everything he told me to heart. He helped this single mother for over a decade raise her son. I owe him much gratitude.

Sending heartfelt prayers, condolences, strength, hugs and love to you all. This photo was taken in 1998. Andre was hosting an event with Jagged Edge and Dawkins & Dawkins. Such an extraordinary person that everyone loved because he loved everyone. We´re going to miss you my friend and Minnesota will never be the same without your presence. Rest up Debonair from one Chicagoan/Minnesotan to another.

Andre booked me for many events in the twin cities. When we first met it was at a comedy event. He didn´t know me and I didn´t know him but the way he greeted me felt like I´d known him forever. He was truly a gift. Always had a way of making people feel welcomed. So sad when I heard the news. I´m glad I had a chance ti see him recently. Rest In peace king. Your legacy is will live on.

I would like to express my deepest sympathy for the loss of your beloved husband Andre. I never had the opportunity to meet him personally, but seeing him at events along with all the Facebook posts showing the good things he was involved with to bring people together, I feel like I knew him. This community has lost a beacon of hope and inspiration. I pray for your comfort and peace.
