You will always be remembered and missed gone too soon

October 16, 2017

Andre and I were high school classmates (he was a year older) and football teammates. My twin brother and I grestly enjoyed our football days at GHS with Andre. He was one of the best people I've ever known. While we lost contact after he graduated, we recently re-connected when he saw my name on LinkedIn. He reached out to me and we shared information about our families and careers and we expressed hopes of seeing each other in the near future. I was crushed when I heard of his passing. I want to express my sincere condolences to Mrs. Stanley (one of my high school teachers) and to the entire Stanley family. Andre will be greatly missed.

I met Andre when we were Brookings fellows in 2011. When Andre came into the room, you couldn't miss him because he made everyone feel important. His warm smile was ever present and his optimism was contagious. I feel blessed to have known him.

I enjoyed having Andre as a colleague. He was warm, kind, and knowledgeable, with a quick smile and a dedication to public health. We were fortunate to have him teach with us at UMBC, where he was popular with students. His death is truly a loss to the public health community.

Andre was an adjunct professor at UMBC for many years teaching Community and Public Health. His students adored him. He spoke about his daughters with great pride. What an amazing legacy he leaves of decades of anti-tobacco research and policy. He was such an inspiration, going back for his doctorate in his 60's. We, his colleagues and students, were blessed to have known him. The UMBC Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Health Administration and Policy has made a donation to APHA in Andre's name.

Andre had an incredibly charismatic personality with so much charm that it absolutely overwhelmed a room. I relished my happy hour times with him to hear of his latest thoughts and adventures. I will miss him greatly.

Andre and his ever-present smile will be greatly missed by myself and the rest of our Congressional fellows. Getting to know him was a highlight of the year we spent on Capitol Hill. He brought positivity with him wherever he went.

I met André for his orientation in the DrPH doctoral program at UIC. André and I had a lot to talk about since I'm from NC, and we had a great conversation. I will remember him as being just such a wonderfully warm, nice person, who was a positive force on others. Thinking of the family during this time.

Andre is indeed a soul taken much too soon! I remember his time in Chicago and sending him the UMBC teaching role. He was a big fan of TV personality Charlie Rose, and made me laugh when he took me to a hole in the wall restaurant in Baltimore (with great food!). I feel blessed to have known him and I know that there are thousands of lives saved and touched by his positive work!

To Andre's family, I send my condolences on the sad and shocking news of Andre's death. Andre has been a dear colleague and friend over the years; we met in the early days of the ASSIST project. Andre touched many lives, and so many will miss Andre's smile, his laughter, his passion for community and justice, the warmth and ease of his presence, his endless capacity for growth and learning, and just the plain old fun that it was to spend time with him. Andrea and Amber, I've never met you, but I've watched you grow up over the years in the many pictures your ever-proud and loving father shared. To all his family, may your faith, and love for one another, carry you.

My condolences to Andre's family and loved ones. I worked with him as a public health advocate. I remember Andre sitting at a restaurant table, eating good food with other public health advocates, smiling that Andre-smile, and talking about his daughters and his family. You could tell that he loved you dearly. May God Bless and Keep you as God has done with Andre.

I've known Andre 25 years, as a colleague and friend in the tobacco control world. I repeatedly saw pictures, Andrea and Amber, of you growing up. It's been several years since I last saw him, when we had lunch together in D.C., but we kept in touch on LinkedIn. Thinking of Andre always brought a smile to my face. My sincere condolences to all his family: May you be comforted in memories of Andre.

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. May you find solace in the knowledge that your father, son, loved one represented love and light. He was a gentle soul and a great storyteller with a wonderful sense of humor! Most of all, he was an adoring father. In fact, I don't remember too many conversations where his beautiful daughters , Andrea and Amber, didn't become the subject!

I am grateful to have had a chance to work with him. He was a true public health champion and his passion for doing the right thing will not be forgotten!

May God bless you,

Andre Stanley -It is hard to believe that you have transitioned to be with our Lord and Savior because each time I have been in your presence over the last four years you have been full of life. Our connection was Wofford College and the Black Alumni Association. I am grateful that God allowed our paths to cross and make's 3rd Annual Black Alumni Summit and Homecoming 2016 so much more special for me. I am happy that you had the opportunity to celebrate and enjoy the fruits of our labor at Wofford. Rest In Paradise my brother and my friend. To your family, I pray strength and implore them to keep the fond memories of you locked deep in their hearts to live with them forever.

Remembering Andre G. Stanley - It was such a pleasure meeting Andre last year at the DrPH Summer Institute in Chicago. He was a proud father and husband, introducing and sharing memories of his daughters and family. Andre watched out for me when we were in Chicago, always making sure I got where I needed to be safely. It was with much sadness that we all learned of his passing at our SI on August 24, 2017. He was remembered during the student and faculty achievement session. Andre was a leader in public health practice. His contributions to our profession will be remembered. He will be missed by colleagues and although I have only known him for a short while, I too will miss is genuine kindness. My condolences to the family. Continue in his legacy of caring and making a difference.

I really do not know where to start expressing the sadness felt by the loss of the unconditional love that you had for your family, and also your friends. I am one of those lucky friends to whom you gave much more than you ever received--advice, surprises like Mother's Day cards, treats to eat, pop-in visits to say hello, and much much more.

To Andrea and Amber, your dad was so proud of you and cherished every moment that he spent with you. Andre often said that his girls were growing up too fast, and he was not looking forward to an empty nest.

To Mrs. Stanley, the integrity, intellect, compassion, and fortitude that was such a part of Andre's presence was taught and practiced in your home, during his early years. Thank-you for giving us such a gift.

"Andre, you accomplished so much in your life. You set goals, met them, and created more goals, many times, while working full-time, and taking care of your girls on a regular basis. I don't know where you found the time to follow local, state, and national politics the way you did. Furthermore, I don't know how many people could have done what you did without telling folks to take a hike, but you always made time, even if it meant putting yourself last. God Bless, Love, A. Kaye."

Andre was such a wonderful friend and colleague for so many years, we miss him so. His gentle and steadfast spirit and wonderful sense of humor kept us all going when times were tough. He was there for us in the early days, and through the many ways he served the cause of tobacco control. I often sought and trusted his advice, and he was thoughtful and generous in response. The Tobacco Control community is coming together over the sad news of Andre's passing. I have heard from many of our old friends this week, and I think that would make Andre smile.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Andre was the nicest and humblest man I knew. You never would have known about the wonderful things he had done in the field of public health because he never tooted his own horn. That humbleness and love of science came from the parenting of Naomi and Mack Stanley. Praying for the family.

Some students come through your classroom and they leave an indelible print on your life. Andre was one of those students, and in teaching him I also learned from him. Our paths crossed and intersected over the years as he pursued his calling in public health. He was a caring, compassionate public health servant-leader dedicated to lifting those who were the most vulnerable and disenfranchised among us. I am a better person because I was blessed to have known him and to have worked with him. May the peace of God and the love of Christ be with the family and all who knew and loved him.

Although I never knew Andre personally, I knew his father, mother, and sister. Mack was a great friend and mentor to me as a very young science teacher at West Jr. High and he shared stories and his pride about his family with me! Jennifer came through West and I knew her as an intelligent and hard-working student! Please accept my sincere sorrow at the loss of such a tallented and loving man!
