Centerville - Andrea Marie Cain died peacefully at home in Centerville on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at the age of 90 surrounded by her family. Born September 9, 1933, in
Quincy, Massachusetts to John and Rita Gallagher, she was the youngest sibling to sister Thérese and brother Jack. A graduate of Sacred Heart High School and New Rochelle College, Andrea became an elementary-school art teacher who many of her students still remember today. In 1959 she married Richard Joseph Cain with whom she bore four beautiful children: Joseph Lambert, Kevin Charles, Christopher John, and Caitlin Candace. Andrea was a devout Catholic parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Osterville.
Andrea had an exceptional memory and could recount with many details stories of people she knew, events she experienced and places where she lived or visited. Her interesting stories about her life were remarkable, so much so, it almost seemed at times she was spinning a wicked yarn. She especially loved to reminisce about her life on Cape Cod. Whether it was rowing a boat down Wianno Avenue with her dad following the 1938 New England Hurricane, golfing and dining at the Oyster Harbors Club, dancing the night away at the Wianno Club as a young woman, zooming about in her yellow and orange Jeep as a teenager or sailing Bettlecats, Wianno Seniors and Juniors - she knew how to live.
An accomplished cook, Andrea introduced her family to international cuisine. She had a thirst for culinary adventure - French, Asian, Russian, Scandinavian, and Caribbean fare (just to name a few) and nothing was off limits. Andrea was also an enthusiastic and creative gardener who cultivated each year a great variety of flowers and tasty vegetables. She enjoyed watching birds fly in and out of her big, beautiful garden on Wianno Avenue and to each of her four children she gave a nickname of a different species of bird. Above all, Andrea was an artist. She saw beauty everywhere: in the glint of the sun on the waves, the wind waving through trees, the colors of stained-glass windows, the slant of a roof, and the curves of wooden boats built at the Crosby family boatyards. She was often spotted about town, by the ocean, or in the woods painting watercolors of the village of Osterville and landscape scenery of other parts of the Cape. She was sometimes asked to substitute-teach art classes at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and at regional art shows. She was asked many times to sell her paintings and her work adorns the walls of many Cape homes.
Andrea is survived by her four children, her grandchildren Gabriel, Lillian and Charlotte and her daughters-in-law Ruth, Mollie and Fritzi.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on June 8, 2024 at 11 AM in Our Lady of Assumption Church, Wianno Ave. Osterville. Burial will be in Mosswood Cemetery. For online guestbook & directions, visit
