Andrea Gil Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 14, 2025.
South Weymouth - Andrea Catherine (Pope) Gil went home to be with her Lord and Savior on February 13, 2025 at the age of 72 after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Andrea was the beloved daughter of the late Herbert and Dorothy Pope, sister to the late Brian Pope, granddaughter of the late Catherine Burke and Elsie Pope, and daughter-in-law of the late Regy de Gil and Julio R. Gil of Guatemala. Andrea leaves behind her aunt Frances Kearney of Linden Ponds in Hingham, her brother Matthew Pope of Tampa, FL, his wife and three sons. Her cousin Jan from Washington, D.C. has been like a sister to her all her lifetime and has been there for her in good and bad times. Andrea also leaves behind many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

Andrea was born in Weymouth, MA, grew up in Braintree and married the love of her life in 1974 Juan Antonio Gil from Chichicastenango, Guatemala. She leaves behind Juan's family, sisters-in-law Flor de Maria Gil and Maria Soledad Gil de Valdez of Guatemala City.

After volunteering in Guatemala for one year in September 1973 to October 1973 Andrea returned to Braintree in 1973. Andrea and Juan got married April 20, 1974 and they celebrated 50 years of marriage on 4/20/24.

Andrea held many different jobs during her lifetime. She worked at the V.A. West Roxbury Dental Clinic and later at the EKG/Stress Lab. Next for an oncologist in Milton, MA assisting in the office. Her last and most fulfilling job was as an Outreach Worker at Braintree Senior Center and 19 years at Weymouth Senior Center. She was able to help seniors to improve their lives, and this is what made her the happiest.

Andrea was a long-standing member of Braintree's South Congregational Church and was very active in the annual craft fair and other activities, as well as holding positions on many boards and committees. During her adult life she volunteered with many programs but her passion was helping the people in Guatemala. Andrea and Juan have been actively helping an organization called "Mil Milagros" donating books for the literacy program and the Traveling Library Bus. Gift bags were made up and given to new mothers and their babies, knit hats, blankets and other baby items were given to the new mothers.

Andrea was known by her family, friends and church members as a kind, compassionate and giving soul, always trying to help any way she could. She was a care-giver to many family members in her adult life. She was a God-loving, faithful woman and was a source of light for many, always taking time to send an encouraging note or a supportive letter/card to someone in need.

Andrea loved crafting and crocheting and made many projects for her church fairs and gifts to friends and families. She played golf in her younger years and later she loved to travel with her husband and explore other countries, new foods, artworks and music. She took pride in working in her yard and backyard rock garden, pruning and replanting every year.

As we say goodbye to Andrea, we do so with hearts full of gratitude for the time we were given with her. We take comfort in knowing that she is at peace with her Lord and loved-ones in heaven. She leaves behind a legacy of love that will resonate forever with her family and friends, and her memory will be treasured always.

A Celebration of Andrea's life will take place on May 24, 2025 at 11:00 at South Congregational Church, 1075 Washington Street, Braintree, MA 02184.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to South Congregational Church or milmilagros.org.

Andrea Gil was a beloved friend and a compassionate woman who was selfless when caring for her family and friends. She supported them in many ways, assisting her father in maintaining his health through the charitable giving of her time, seeking resources to share with those in need, and facilitating social connections to newly arrived visitors. She appreciated people of all cultures and respected their life´s journeys. Likewise, she enjoyed the fine arts, music, movement, literature, and, most of all, travel. Andrea and her beloved husband, Juan Antonio Gil, spent many incredible seasons in the Department of Solola, Guatemala, creating classroom libraries with curated Spanish storybooks and eventually a Traveling Library Bus that will travel from school to school to continue to develop students' Spanish literacy and their love of reading, writing, and storytelling.
I will miss you very much, mi querida amiga, Andrea Gil.
