Andrea Wengert-Muratet Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 25, 2024.

Our world lost an angel that walked among us. Andrea Wengert-Muratet or Annie, as we lovingly called her, died in her home surrounded by family and friends after a fierce battle with pancreatic cancer.

Music was a part of Annie's soul. She grew up singing with her mom, at folk mass in her church, in her high school Glee Club and professionally in a local group, "As Time Goes By." Annie could pick up a harmony in an instant.

Annie worked two decades in Healthcare Administration. After many years in healthcare, Annie followed a dream and became a teacher at age 40. She was involved in California's First Five Initiative, developing the Family Health Center of San Diego's first Family Resource Center. She became the first Director of the program which provided early intervention for children, birth to age five. It is now known as Healthy Development Services. She taught at Cajon Valley Union School district and schools in Colorado Springs and San Luis Obispo. Third Grade was Annie's favorite, though she finished her teaching career as a Reading Specialist.

Annie was preceded in death by her parents, Dick & Hedy Wengert. She leaves behind her spouse, Alan Muratet, a son Alec Morgan (wife Nikki), Alan's son, Adam (wife Mary) and three grandchildren that were her whole life and the reason she moved back to San Diego; her siblings include: Steve, Mary, John, Cristianne, Ethan & Nathan. Annie had numerous friends, some going back to third grade. She attended St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School in Mission Hills and graduated from Our Lady of Peace Academy before pursuing her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees at SDSU.

A celebration of Annie's life will be held on October 5, 2024 at her alma mater, Academy of Our Lady of Peace, 4860 Oregon Street, San Diego, CA 92116. A presentation and rosary will take place in the Chapel and will be followed by a reception in the Chapel courtyard. Stories about Annie are encouraged.

Annie's beautiful smile, signature dimples and pure heart will live on in the many souls she touched personally and professionally in her 67 years. There will never be another like her.

Our first Valentines Day apart. I carry you in my heart everywhere I go but I would rather have you physically here on earth with me. Love you forever.

Probably our most profound moment was when Annie shifted her focus to approaching death as a new chapter of adventure. None of us truly know what becomes of us after our body is finished, but Annie had made peace with her upcoming transition and told me, "Don´t know where I´m going but it´s gonna be an adventure!"

I first met Andrea in 1983 when she auditioned for a performing group at Singer's Workshop. She had a strong voice and a talent for harmony which put her in just about every group I ever produced: As Time Goes By (40's jazz quintet), Cherry Cola (50's Rock), Flower Power Revival (60's pop), Fish Schtick (sea theme), Witch's Brew (Halloween Revue) and several Christmas Caroling groups. For almost 20 years we had a ball. In 40's garb we opened for a Michael McDonald performance and sang at the Southwest Emmy Awards. As the wicked witch in our Halloween show she did her own green makeup including a fake nose which flew off during a taping for Cox Cable. Off stage, Andrea was a dear friend. She graced every birthday celebration and as usual was always the life of the party. Our group was like a family over the years and I will miss her like a sister.
