A true American Hero, we are grateful for his years of service to his country and fellow Americans. I had the pleasure of meeting General and Mrs. Gatsis, and Andy, as well, through animal rescue. General Gatsis' care and concern for animal welfare has been evident in his many contributions, in word and in deed. We have lost an exemplary representation of the greatness that is our American Military. We have also lost a Humanitarian, one who understood the importance in our lives of our animal companions and the need to keep God's creatures well cared for and safe. Rest easy now and go with God, Brave Soldier and Animal Caretaker. I expect your animal companions have already greeted you at The Rainbow Bridge. We are in your debt, kind Sir. My sympathies to Mrs. Gatsis and Andy, and all family and friends who knew and loved this wonderful man.

Dear Gatsis family,
My heart is saddened, for I grieve with you. General Gatsis certainly had an impressive military career, but I met him in 1987, well after his retirement. I didn’t know him as a soldier. I knew him as a friend. And over the years, I grew to know him as John’s generous and witty father, Alice Wynne's devoted and loving husband, a friend of the less fortunate, a moral man with an unending passion for life and liberty, and a champion for all animals. He effortlessly embodied Christian values. He was always thankful for his many blessings, he loved the unlovable, cared about the less fortunate, and he never boasted or bragged. His confidence was quiet, yet when he spoke his moral, ethical, and principled ideals were obvious. He deeply cared for his country, and his heart grew heavy when freedom and individual liberties were threatened or destroyed. He was a true patriot and friend. I will miss him. And for as long as I live, he will live in my heart and memories. The below quote describes General Gatsis.
"Good character is more worthy to be praised than outstanding talent. Most talents are to some extent a gift. Good character, by contrast, is not given to us. We have to build it piece by piece by thought, choice, courage, and determination."
I was blessed to know such a fine example of a man.
