I was lucky enough to have Andrew Sinclair as my American History tutor during his time - 1965 to 1967 - at University College London. As well as being an exceptional teacher and brilliant company he was generous with advice, time and money. In 1968, knowing that I wanted to write a novel, he gave me 150 pounds (2,500 pounds in today's currency) and lent me a portable typewriter. He didn't rate the novel and it wasn't published, but that is another story.
