Samuel SWITZER Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 20, 2018.
SWITZER, Samuel (Ousher)
February 25, 1926 - Calgary, Alberta
June 20, 2018 - Calgary, Alberta
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Samuel (Ousher) Switzer announce his passing on June 20, 2018 at the age of 92.

Born in Calgary, Alberta, he was the youngest child and the only son of Jewish immigrants from Radom, Poland. His parents came to this country of opportunity to seek a new future, evading a holocaust that swept away a whole generation of family members. Out of necessity, to help support his family, he began working at the young age of 5, hired by a pharmacy to deliver prescription medication with his bicycle. Hard work and luck characterized his life. He was a pioneer builder and developer of the city of Calgary. He was a proud Calgarian, and deeply dedicated to his Jewish faith. His career epitomizes entrepreneurship: seeking opportunities where none seemed to exist, and learning from failures that served as seeds for future great successes. If someone needed a job and was willing to work, Sam would provide that job. From a restaurant to a jewelry store to a car dealership on MacLeod Trail, he moved on to constructing apartment buildings, shopping centers, the first round hotel in Calgary (The Summit) with Alberta's first Casino, followed by renowned Elbow River Casino.

While not formally trained in a university environment, he was a self-taught student of life. He was especially proud of the honorary degree bestowed upon him by Mount Royal University.

Equal to his business accomplishments, philanthropy, volunteerism and community support were essential parts of his life. He has received accolades from the Governor General of Canada, Prime Ministers of Canada and Israel, the Premier of Alberta, the Mayor of Calgary, and has been recognized with the City of Calgary's much coveted White Hat award. He has supported causes ranging from bursaries for single mothers at Mount Royal University, housing and support for men at Fresh Start Recovery, cancer research at the Alberta Children's Hospital, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the rebuilding and dedication of Heritage Park's "Little Synagogue," Calgary Jewish Family Services, Habitat for Humanity, Magen David Adom and the Weizmann Institute of Science. In 2012, he was honored by the Jewish National Fund for his role in developing recyclable water in Sderot in Israel's Negev Desert.

He was an active Rotarian and member of Skal. He is survived by his loving children, Darlene (Bill), Lorne (Nadine), Susan, Ronald (Helmi), John (Christine) and Mark (Martin), stepchildren, Merrina (Dan), and Laurie (Wes), and grandchildren, Sarah, Robert, Sarede, Andrew, Lucille, Gabrielle, Raphael, Zachary, Joshua, Rachel, Noah, Valentina and Juliana and 10 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by spouses Aneta Switzer and Betty Switzer and stepson Ron Casat.

Many thanks to his faithful staff members Carolyn Reu and Anne Christopoulos, Peter Kearns and Kelly Kearns. Special thanks to the wonderful caregivers Evangaline Sagucio, Esperanza Mariano and the staff of Focus on Caring. Sincere appreciation to the doctors and nurses at the Foothills and Rockyview Hospitals for their support.

Funeral to be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at the Beth Tzedec Synagogue, 1325 Glenmore Trail SW, followed by interment at Chevrah Kadisha Cemetery on 17818-37th St. S.W., Calgary T2Y 0M9 (corner of 37th Street SW and Highway 22X in Calgary). Shiva arrangements care of the Chevrah Kadisha of Calgary.

They broke the mould when they made Sam Switzer, what a fantastic person, boss and friend. Always enthusiastic, friendly and supportive, a light went out on the day Sam passed but his memory and legacy will live on forever. Condolences to the family and to Peter, Anne and of course Carolyn who were a fantastic support to Sam.
Thanks Sam for the memories,
Best Regards,
Scott, Nadine and the Twins.

To the Switzer Family, Our sincere condolences. We were fortunate enough to know Sam, not only as an Entrepreneur and Philanthropist, but a great Volunteer on the Reception committee with the Calgary Stampede. Anne Christopoulos would always say how happy it made him to be a part of our Committee and yet we were the recipients of a man's work with positive energy and such a kind heart. Sam will be missed and our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad time.

How sad to hear that Mr. Switzer has passed. I had a friend over just the night before and were talking about our youth and I brought up Mr. Switzer. My Mother was an entertainer at the Hotel and so he was always very gracious and kind to me. I can still remember how he would always give us a great table for some of the amazing entertainment at the top of the world. Rest in Peace Mr. Switzer and sincere condolences to the family.

It is with an extreme heavy heart that I say farewell to a dear and trusted friend and know how devistated you all are,--- Darlene and Bill, lorne and Nadine,Ronald and Helmi, the grand chilren, Susan,John and Christine, Mark. God gave Samuel a Torch to carry, which enabled him to cast brightness and illuminate everyone he came in contact with, where ever he journeyed .His Philanthropy to forward worthy causes, assist the burdened, the helpless and the weary were among his greatest concerns. I have known Sam as a Brother in Masonary and as a Shriner for some 50 years and a part of his Amalgamated Properties for 22 years. His passion for helping children was always gold ! God has an especial place for him.

Our hearts are broken. Which is why I like to recall a way in which Sam has touched my life dearly, which is why I feel the need to share a cherished memory.
I always saw Sam as a gentle, kind, and loving man. He was a joy to be around and I always found myself wanting to know more about his adventures and invaluable advice. Which is why I respected Sam and the different perspective He gave me in viewing our lives on Earth. That we need to have faith in G-d, that live comes with the good and the bad and we must take it as we are give. Along with telling my sister and myself to watch Fiddler on the Roof and read Emuna, that little advice, along with the countless stories you shared with me, make me glad to have known you and call you a friend. You will be missed.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Uncle Sam's children, grandchildren, great grandchildren. We are so sorry that we cannot attend today's service, but our hearts are with you all. Sam was such a loving man to our Auntie Betty and taught us much over the years about business and hard work & philanthropy. But what I will especially remember fondly is how interested he was in what we were all doing and involved in and how he would remember every detail from the last time we spoke. A very special man who will never be forgotten.
