So shocked to hear that you passed away! Angela, I just learnt and did`t get the chance to come to visit you for the last time. We met when attending UBC and sharing the same studying room in 1989. Since then, we had many light laughs and serious discussions. I remember vividly seeing you in last May at the Gateway Theater to enjoy my daughter's band concert. When there was no response since December, I was thinking you were just out of reach to explore the world... We will miss you!

the Blue booty bird in Galagapos Islands

Beatrice Lee

September 8, 2015

I will think of you each time...
as I walk a trail in a foreign land, i.e South Africa;
as I hike up mountain, i.e. Whistler;
as I cross raging mountain creek, i.e. Mt. Baker
as I float down a river with rapids in a raft, i.e. Rio Napo, Ecudor;
as I go snorkelling in the ocean, i.e. Galagapos Islands;
as I squeeze through a narrow canyon, i.e. Antelope Canyon;

You have been there with and for me at home and abroad. I shall keep you in a special corner of my heart!

In memory of my little sister Angela,
She was kind, generous, and capable,
Strong as bamboo, steadfast like the spruce,
Weathering through wind and snow
Eight years in school, she stayed to serve her country
Walking across the world, where few have tread
Always ready to help friends and family
Generous to people everywhere
She left us as she went for a swim,
Let us mourn her and remember her forever

Eulogy for Angela Choi, in memory of my beloved little sister Thursday, September 3, 2015
Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends and relatives:
Angela weighed little over 4 pounds at birth. Doctors and family members were quite worried. Even underweight, she was quite healthy and she didn't cry much. As baby Angela grew older, she learned things very quickly. She was curious about everything and she often asked questions that I could not answer, even when she was very young. She was always cheerful, and brought a lot of joy to our family. When she was 4 years old, Angela and I started playing together, games like hide and seek, stealing food from the kitchen, etc. I was always getting the two of us into trouble.
Angela had a favourite yellow dress when she was about 6 years old. I teased her and gave her a nickname and I also gave myself a nickname. She was pleased with the nickname I gave her but quite displeased the nickname I gave myself. We kept this secret between the two of us.
To enter an English primary school, she needed an English name. Lily suggested we give her the name Angela, a name that Lily used to describe her sister as an angel from the Heaven. In her early school years, she made two life-long friends, Terry Chan and Sui Cheung, neither of whom could attend today. Angela, Terry and Sui would sometimes gather in our house to play.
My favourite memory with Angela was when she was 8 years old. That was the year I started working to earn my own income. I said Angela, I got money from work. Let's go see a movie and have snacks. I held her hand and watched to make sure she would not run or fall. Mom often reminded me, Look after your little sister. Angela loved the idea of going to see a movie, and we went for movies once a month. We had a nephew working in a movie house who got us 4 free movie tickets every month.
When she started high school, I still held her hands every time when we went for movies. One day, as I was going to take her hand for a movie, she slowly pushed my hand away and said to me, I am old enough to walk by myself. She was 12 years old.
Angela started high school at the age of 11. She was accepted into The Sacred Heart Girls High School, the most prestigious girls' high school in Macau, a school run by Catholic Mothers and Sisters, mostly in English, that only accepted students with high academic standing. As a comparison, Sacred Heart School is like Crofton House School in Vancouver. Getting accepted into it was difficult but the tuition fee was also very high. We managed her tuition fee in the first year. In the second year and the remaining high school years, she was able to earn some scholarship and partially relieved the family's financial strain. At school, she constantly placed among the top 3 in her grade. She graduated as the top student in her class.
I left Macau for Vancouver in 1976. Angela was 14 years old. However, she took over the responsibility of looking over Mom and Dad and helped out with the house chores without any complaint. In one of our family correspondences, she consulted me if she should find a part-time job. I replied to her that her primary responsibility was to do well at school. The older sisters and brother would try to solve the finances and sent support back to the family. At the end of the letters, we each signed our nicknames.
Angela came to Vancouver in the summer of 1980. The sisters and I were so delighted to be together again. My little sister grew up as a young lady, still maintained the same personality, very intelligent, active, passionate, eager to learn and willing to accept new challenges. In September, she started her first year at Langara College, uncertain of what to do. We had a little discussion and she decided to do an Engineering Degree. She finished the first year as an honours student at Langara and transferred to the Faculty of Applied Science at UBC where she chose to study Electrical Engineering, a major most students would have found difficult. Yet, she was able to earn enough scholarships to complete her degree. She graduated in 1985 and worked for a couple of years, before returning to UBC and beginning her Master's study in Biomedical Engineering. She completed her Master's degree and accepted a job in Industry Canada. While she was working there, she received a number of job offers from other organizations, including offers from MIT and Motorola. However, she chose to stay and serve her country. Her work, as revealed from her co-worker, affects many of us. She chose to stay in order to look after mom and dad. Even after she moved out, she still came home to cook for mom and dad. She still came home to do the house chores.
Angela liked music and reading. She liked to listen to folk songs, country music and classical. Sometimes she sang at home to express her joy and sadness. She liked to read stories about ancient heroes. She loved characters that started a difficult life and gradually worked hard to gain a better living. Mom kept telling us not to read in the dim light and not to read during bedtime but we never listened.
Angela loved hiking and travelling. She has travelled across the globe and has had experiences and gained a vast amount of knowledge that many people could only dream of. She was such a remarkable individual that she could still find time to take French, Spanish and cooking classes after work.
Dear friends and relatives, our beloved Angela and my dear little sister has left us but she will remain in our hearts and we will remember her forever.
I would like to close my Eulogy by recalling how dad felt about Angela's personality:
Angela is Brave, Kind , Intelligent and Passionate just like a heroine in ancient China.

Angela was a thoughtful and very skilled engineer with a fine sense of humour. It is hard to believe she has left us so soon. I will always remember her patiently explaining the basics of engineering analysis when her reports dealt with controversial topics. When Industry Canada was preparing for the Winter Olympics Angela was an unmatched source of expertise and her estimates were always of the best quality.

All of us who had the privilege of working with her will forever miss her companionship.

Angela will always be remembered as an extremely giving, selfless and gifted person. "Girl Power" is what she shouted out at my son's high school graduation to the girls that received multiple scholarship. We miss her so much already!

Ode to Angela
In radios and engineering she excels and shines
Amid mountains and hikes she leads and guides
Gone with the wind her strong body it may seem
In our memories her beautiful soul will never dim
Vanity in vanity all is vanity the Preacher did declare
In God we trust, life everlasting the hope we all share
Our deepest condolences

Angela, I got to know you on the Saturday walks and at the fish dinners. You always had that ready smile; you were the symbol of life and energy; you seeked and led the more challenging walks. I am saddened by your passing, but your friendliness and vivaciousness will be remembered. May you rest in peace.

It was my honour to know and work with Angela from her very first day with Industry Canada until my retirement in 2007. No one could be more capable and dedicated with any of the multitude of projects undertaken by her. Her buoyant personality and sharing of her travel adventures were bonuses for all of us who were privileged to share our workplace in the Pacific Regional Office.

Sincere condolences to Angela's family and loved ones.

After working together with Angela daily now for many years I am going to miss our many great conversations about engineering, economics and the wonders of the world around us. Now her office is so very empty and quiet and I'm deeply saddened I will no longer share those times together with my good friend and colleague. My heart goes to Angela's family and many loved ones, who I know will miss her profoundly. For you, we will all keep her close in our memories.

I was lucky to have known Angela. We met 20 years ago at our apartment building. I will cherish every moment I spent with her either on trips or just hanging out. She was an amazing, smart, kind, generous, special person. I loved her adventurous spirit and zest for life.Angela will be in my heart forever and will truly be missed. The last thing she said to me was "see you soon" as she walked to return some library books. It was too soon to lose my best friend but knowing she is at peace is comforting.

Angela was one of the youngest and healthiest members of our hiking group, so it has been difficult for us to accept her sudden passing. Optimistic and full of life, she brought so much happiness and energy to others, with her sincere and helpful manner and welcoming smile. Our only comfort was that she didn't sufferAngela, we will miss you dearly. May you rest in peace.

Angela was such an inclusive, caring, and welcoming person. I really admired her intelligence, her drive, and her humanity.
I worked with her during, and after the Olympics. We had some very interesting, and amusing Coffee breaks. She was an avid reader, her back pack was usually stuffed with books from the Library, most nights when she went home from work. I will miss our girls night out, and our movie nights, and all the other times when the girls get together. You will be very much missed.
My deepest sympathies to Angela's family, and friends.
