Angela Cunneely Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 25, 2023.
Angela Connolly Cunneely, 64, passed away at home on August 4 after a courageous battle with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and virulent cancer of the bile duct. Angie was born on June 22, 1959 in the Bronx, New York City, to the late Margaret (Jantek) and Edward Connolly. She married her high school sweetheart Martin when he joined the Navy, and together they lived in Tennessee, California, and Washington state before settling back in the Bronx. There, Angie was active in the PTA when her children were in school, then studied ESL at Lehman College where she helped many adult students learn English.

After the family moved to Delaware in 1989, Angie earned her Certification as a Medical Assistant and worked for many years in women's health, where she was known for her competent and compassionate care for her many patients. She became active in her new community as well, volunteering with both Bike Delaware and the Newark Bike Project. She also fought tirelessly for the preservation of the former Orphanage property on Chestnut Hill Road.

In addition to her advocacy, Angie's interests included caring for her lush garden, flying in small planes, and traveling to the Dominican Republic and throughout Europe.

Angie was predeceased by her parents and brother Edward. She is survived by her husband Martin, her son Martin Jr. (Shelley), daughter Melissa Schweitzer (Rob), grandchildren Connor, Tyler, Lilah, Jake, Eva, and Ella, and her two sisters Mary-Catherine Connolly and Marguerite Cain (Dave), as well as many nieces and nephews and her little dog Midnight.

I ran into Angie several years ago outside a doctor's office. She ran over to me and said, "Hi Kristie" and gave me a hug like a long-lost friend? She knows my name, knows I know Frank ...then boom it hit's me, it's Angie, from biking! It had been a few years. She started talking, I started talking and hours later we got all caught up and solved the world's problems too! We never did ever finish talking the whole time I knew her. As my family would say, we were vaccinated with a phonograph needle! From that moment on we reignited a friendship that I will treasure forever. It's not often you meet someone who is as open and honest as Angie. She made me laugh, I learned so much from her, she was passionate about doing what was right and she never forgot a friend. Also, she never forgot a song or a lyric! She, Frank, Kurt, and I went on some wonderful bike rides together, always followed by eating and talking some more. She faced her cancer with unmatched bravery and was more concerned about how much it was affecting everyone else's lives. I will always be in awe of her love and commitment to her family and friends (and those she´d just met who she would take under her wing). Kurt and I treasure her friendship and will miss her. As they say, when God created her, he christened her "made in the Bronx" then broke the mold. Our sympathies go out to her loving family and friends and those she touched unknowingly in life.

Angie and I reconnected many years ago when I ran into her at Frank's doctor's office. Her outgoing nature was the catalyst. She said "Hi, Kristie"... and I thought who is this person that knows me by name, she looks so familiar. Even though it had been a few years, we reconnected immediately. And we talked, and talked and talked...and never really ever stopped. I treasure that day, because Kurt and I reconnected with our two dear biking friends, Angie and Frank. We did so much together and spent hours discussing every topic under the sun. If only we could run the world the way we wanted it to be. She was a blessing, so kind, generous, understanding, thoughtful, she loved nature and found a way to make it better. She sowed the seeds of friendship where ever she went. Kurt and I will miss her and wish she were here to create many more happy memories together.

My first memory of Angela was meeting her on Thanksgiving of 2021. She was very kind and welcoming and I could tell from the jump what kind of grandmother she was, aside from the lovely stories everyone had told me. She was powerfully generous, caring, and strong. The kind of woman anyone could feel safe around. I´m grateful to have known her for as long as I did and to be accepted by her family.

Angela was my best friend. We partnered in many things that included advocacy and activism for walking, bicycling, permaculture and environmental causes. Together we volunteered and served on the boards of multiple organizations that included Newark Bike Project and Bike Delaware in their early inception. Angela co-founded Save The Orphanage Property (STOP) with me, a coalition of citizens and organizations that attempted to save green space and bring a regional park to Ogletown-S. Newark. She co-wrote and edited for several advocacy blogs that included 1st State Bikes and Ogletown Resilience. I will sorely miss her beautiful personality, lively enthusiasm, companionship, and embrace of the greater good.
