I am saddened to hear the news of Gus' passing. I worked at the Unama'ki Training and Education Center in Eskasoni and Gus was the favorite substitute for many years. He was a regular for us just as he was at the Sydney River timmies. He always shared a smile, wise practical words and a joke or two. He always spoke proudly of his sons and looked forward to the next visit. He Definitely left a lasting impression with staff and students and will be fondly remembered.

The family of Gus MacLean,
I had the great privilege of being a student of Mr. MacLean and of teaching with him at Donkin Morien High School as a substitute teacher. He was one of my favorite teachers and one of the best people I have ever known. I have thought of him often over the years. I have wonderful memories of him. He was caring and kind and an absolute tease! I am so sorry I did not see him since he left Donkin. I will continue to think of him and to remember. What beautiful memories you, his family and friends, must have! My husband, who also knew Gus, and I are so sorry for your loss. Sincerely, Eileen Morford-Martin

We were deeply saddened to hear about Gus's passing. I had the good fortune of teaching with him for many years at Donkin Morien. Gus was always there for the right reasons. He was good to his students and a pleasure to work alongside.
Anybody that played sports with or against Gus knew that they were in a competition, but they also knew that there was nobody that liked to have fun during and after the game more than Gussie.
Please accept sincere sympathy for the loss of a truly great person, and regrets at not being able to attend the wake and funeral. We have lost one of the best!

One of Gussie's words of wisdom that I always associate with him , is the phrase " You have to play the " cards you are dealt".Frank borrowed this many times after hearing Gus and accompanied it with " as Gussie says".
