Angus Mitchell Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Feb. 4 to Feb. 5, 2009.

MITCHELL Angus Ewing (Gus)It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and friend Angus (Gus) Mitchell. After bravely battling lung cancer, Gus slipped away on February 1, 2009. "Wee Angus" was born in Greenock, Scotland on August 26th, 1940, immigrating to North Vancouver at age 7. While attending Queen Mary Elementary and North Vancouver High School, Gus was a gifted athlete, playing key roles on various soccer and baseball teams in the area. He loved music and, in the early days of Rock and Roll, was the envy of the dance floor for his jiving prowess. Graduating from high school in 1958, Gus went on to attend UBC where he received a Bachelor of Education in Counselling Psychology before becoming a long time member of the counselling faculty at North Delta Senior Secondary. There, "Mr. Mitchell" took great pride in the impact he had on his students through counselling them and coaching soccer. He also enjoyed several enduring friendships that developed from his time there. After retiring early, Gus and his best friend and wife, Lani, stepped into a new adventure, running Arbutus Garden House, one of Vancouver's finest bed and breakfasts. Gus got great pleasure helping visitors discover all that he loved about Vancouver, making many close friends throughout the bed and breakfast industry. He gave freely and regularly of his computer expertise to assist technically-challenged friends and associates with their computer problems and webpage developments. Over the last few years, he moved into full retirement while still doing computer marketing, also enjoying traveling and his favourite pastimes like puttering around the house and gardening. He kept ties to North Vancouver, regularly serving on grad reunion committees, and tracking down lost souls to welcome them back into the fold. He will be greatly missed by his family and many dear friends. Gus is survived by: his wife, Lani; daughter, Stacey; brothers-in-law, Jay, Cory, Chris and Tim Baker; sister-in-law Jill Baker and their families; cousin, Joan and her husband Gary Kincaid; Joan's daughter Kelly and husband Peter Aslanowicz, and many Greenock relatives. His family wishes to thank Dr. M. Madsen, Dr. Stuart of the Burnaby Cancer Centre and the Vancouver Palliative Home Care staff for their personal and professional care, as well as friends Dr. John Berezowskjy and Dr. Dietmar Raudzus for their constant support. A Memorial Evening to remember Gus will be held Tuesday, February 10th, 6:30 - 10:00 pm at the Arbutus Club, 2001 Nanton Ave., Vancouver, B.C., V6J 4A1. Please visit www.gusmitchell.com to commemorate Gus' life and to view full details of his Memorial Evening. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Vancouver Palliative Home Care Program in Gus' name would be gratefully appreciated so that these dedicated people can continue to provide such a valuable service to the community. Please address donations to: Vancouver Coastal Health Home Hospice Program, No. 300 - 999 West Broadway, Vancouver, B.C., V5Z 1K5.

Lani,
I'm so sorry to hear of Gus' passing. I fondly remember my first year of teaching at North Delta as a wet behind the ears rookie when we carpooled together along with Bill Havdale. Gus kindly gave me good advice about how to survive in the teaching profession - in particular in the Delta school district.

Luckily for me, Gus was also the counsellor for my riotous grade 8 home room class that I also had to teach for an entire year in Science 8 and Math 8. My little darlings earned the reputation as "the worst students to ever attend a field trip at the Vancouver Planetarium," which will give you an idea of what I was working with. Thanks to Gus' counselling help with some of the worst offenders, I survived the class and the year (and went on to 33 more years in SD 37).

I'm going to miss Gus. He was quite the guy; sorry that he had to leave us so young.
