Ponte Vedra Beach - Anita G. Madigan passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 13, 2025, in
Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. She had gone to bed with joyful anticipation for an upcoming Mediterranean cruise and simply did not wake. Anita's life was defined by love, laughter, and boundless generosity-a legacy she leaves behind with grace. She was 84.
Born on April 13, 1941, in Wheatland, Indiana, to Harold and Doyne (Morrison) Roberson, Anita grew up on the family farm, where she learned the value of hard work, community, and a well-timed joke. A spirited participant in 4H, head cheerleader, and Vice President of the Class of 1959 at Wheatland High School (Go Jeeps!), Anita's early years were filled with energy, leadership, and a knack for bringing people together.
She married her high school sweetheart, Jim Madigan, and began their adventure in Oceanside, California, where she proudly supported Jim's service as a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps and embraced motherhood with the birth of their first child, Terry. The couple later returned to Indianapolis, where daughters Michelle and Shannon joined the family, and they settled in Carmel, Indiana.
Anita was a devoted homemaker and the heart of her household-sewing clothes for her children, cheering from the sidelines, and always ready with a ride, a snack, and a word of encouragement. She balanced family life in support of Jim's career at Merchant's National Bank and with a part-time role at Winona Hospital, which blossomed into fulfilling opportunities in the medical records department.
Her commitment to community extended beyond her home and work. Anita served on the boards of the Benefe Guild and Stansfield Circle of Indianapolis, served as a compassionate Stephen Minister, and volunteered with numerous organizations. Most recently, she shared her love of history and storytelling as a docent at the Lightner Museum in St. Augustine.
Anita was a loyal sports fan-rooting for the Pacers, Colts, and Jaguars-and an avid golfer alongside Jim, enjoying time with cherished friends at Highland Country Club (Indianapolis), The Landings (Savannah), and Palencia Golf Club (St. Augustine). She cultivated deep friendships and community at Ocean Grande, Serenata Beach Club, Grace United Methodist Church, and the Church of Eleven22.
Known for her radiant smile, quick wit, and open heart, Anita welcomed everyone with warmth and grace. She was a master of saying "yes"-to meals, parties, travel, and the everyday joys of life. Her presence was a gift, and her absence is deeply felt.
Anita was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, Jim; her parents; siblings Ronnie Roberson (Mary), Nancy Meyer; and her daughter Shannon Madigan. She is survived by her sister, Sara (Roberson) Arthur (Ronnie); sister-in-law (Dixie); daughters Terry Schallenberg (Jerry) and Michelle Madigan (Jay Paulus); grandchildren Kati, James, Matt, Jade, Devon, Sydney, and seven great-grandchildren; Roberson and Madigan nieces and nephews; her extended family, and dear friends.
Anita will be interred with her love, Jim, on October 10, 2025 at Jacksonville National Cemetery and we will Celebrate Anita's Life on October 11, 2025 (contact
