Ann and Virgil Hahn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 18 to Sep. 19, 2018.
A celebration internment of Ann Louise Shields Hahn, 84, and Virgil Lee Hahn, Sr. 83, will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Highview Cemetery in Chaplin, next to their son, Norman.
Ann was born Nov. 04, 1933, to Tom "Pap" and Catherine Harned Shields, of Bloomfield, and died peacefully May 10, 2018. Virgil was born Dec. 16, 1934, to Virgil Dutch and Catherine Hahn of Chaplin, and died Feb. 17, 2018.
Ann and Virgil attended Bloomfield High School in Bloomfield. Ann continued her education at Kentucky Baptist Hospital in Louisville, where she became a registered nurse and Virgil continued his education at Lindsey-Wilson College in Columbia.
Ann met Virgil Lee Hahn their freshman year in high school in 1947 and they married Sept. 23, 1955. They relocated their small band minus one to Tyler, Texas when Virgil took a new job. Ann was a devoted housewife and homemaker. She taught her children good core values and manners and ensured that her sons knew how to cook, clean and sew so they would not rely on a woman. She taught her only daughter the same, but added in how to pump her own gas.
Virgil was the Scoutmaster of Troop 84, in Henderson, Ky., and Troop 369, Tyler, Texas. He was also the committee chairman in Tyler, as well as a Brotherhood Member of the Order of the Arrow. Virgil earned his Wood Badge at Philmont Scout Ranch, New Mexico and a Silver Beaver award (a council level distinguished service award of the Boy Scouts of America). The award is given to those who implement the Scouting program and perform community service through hard work, self-sacrifice, dedication and many years of service. Virgil's son Allen and grandsons Corey, Norman and Tyler are all Eagle Scouts.
Virgil and Ann enjoyed going fishing. They spent many a day on Lake Tyler chasing their quarry and would share their bounty of crappie once a year at their annual Epworth Class fish fry. On that day the class would grow 200 percent in size as word spread of the event in which Virgil selflessly fried several pounds of fish, fries and hushpuppies to all in attendance. In his retirement, he, Ann and their cat (Miss Kitty – named after the saloon owner in "Gunsmoke") toured the United States, and Canada in their fifth wheel.
Ann and Virgil were both active in Pollard United Methodist Church and participated in the Eastern Star. Virgil was on the Wednesday work-crew, a maintenance team of volunteers that shared their unique expertise in keeping the church operational, as well as serving as a regular usher.
Ann and Virgil were preceded in death by their parents and a son, Norman Shields Hahn and recently Virgil's sister, Judith Ray Hahn (Sept. 7, 2018).
Ann and Virgil are survived by their four children: Virgil Lee Hahn, Jr. (Benita), Katherine Hahn-Girouard (Dwight "Hap"), Roy T. Hahn (Vicki), and LTC Allen G. Hahn (Penny), six grandchildren, Bethany Hahn-Crenshaw (Ken), Corey Hahn, Norman Hahn, Kim Benson (Kyle) Andrew Hahn, Tyler Hahn and Kaylee Hahn, and three great-grandchildren, Beaux, and Izabela Benson, and Jacob Hahn.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Highview Cemetery in Chaplin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Parkinson Research Foundation at parkinsonhope.org or Boy Scout Troop 369 in care of Pollard United Methodist Church, 3030 Copeland Road, Tyler, TX 75701.
