I got to know Ann very well during my 5 years as a server at Rideau Place On-The-River. I will always remember her fondly for her feistiness, sense of humour and genuine interest in my well being. Her blunt assessments of whatever meal we were serving were usually spot on and always tickled me. Overseas now, when I reminisce about Rideau Place hers is the first name to mind. I only recently found she had passed and my belated condolences to her family, some of whom I had the pleasure to meet. Somewhere in heaven the biggest little lady I ever met is cruising around in a green Jag.

I extend my deepest sympathy to Ann's family on the loss of a fine strong lady and role model. I was honoured to have known Ann through her daughter Sue and grandchildren Kate and Amy. Kate and Amy were valued members of the Ottawa Central Children's Choir during my time with the choir. Ann was a lover of music and always supported the girls and the choir, and we all benefitted from her interest and wisdom.
Thank you. May she rest in peace.

Dear Sue and Family,

Just heard the news about Ann. So sorry to hear the she has left us ... I have very fond memories of her - she always treated me very well. We had quite a few laughs over "JagAnn". Always enjoyed her company and her energy was an inspiration. She'll be missed - God bless her!

i recall with pleasure the many happy hours spent up at the RIdeau Lakes. Back in the mid thirties, Ann and Harold Crain would have been recently married and would come over to the newly built Barnhart cottage. My twin sister Hope and I would come over in the evenings. Together with the various Barnhart children we would dance to the radio shows such as Lucky Srike Hit Parade. Ann and Harold would take turns dancing with us amateurs. Ann could take the lead, and always sang in our ear while doing so. While this was happening Mrs. Barnhart would go to the main Crain cottage to visit with Lola and Dorothy. When she returned around 11:00. That was the signal to return to our cottage nearby. We were always made to feel welcome and music was alwaya a part of the package.

Sue, Christie and Families
Aunt Ann will always be fondly remembered during times at the Big Rideau Lake. She was a very engaging, dignified and delightful relative of the Harold and Peggy Barnhart family. We especially remember our grand ride on her pontoon "livingroom" boat from Sue's to Aunt Ann's island. Our memories of Aunt Ann provide comfort when celebrating her life. Please accept our warmest condolences.

I have have lots of memories of Mrs. Crain, 3 in particular of my childhood memories of spending summers at the Big Rideau Lake. My earliest recollection was of riding in Ann Crain's mahogony Orchid motorboat on trips to Portland, topped with an ice cream treat at Goods' General Store. Another one was of often hearing her pleasant organ music drifting about from her island cottage and lastly her green Jaguar car sporting those 'Jag Ann' license plates. I recognised it even about in Ottawa. She certainly is a wonderful person who will long be fondly remembered.

Mrs.Ann, I will surely missed you. I still miss your smiles. I loved who are no longer with us, but I find I am grateful for having spent the last five or six months with you. I enjoyed every moment of the time i spent with you. No more pain, no more suffering. The gratitude has finally conquered the loss. You are where you wanted to be for a very long time. May your soul rest in peace.

I remember being at a shower for Amy who married my grandson Jeff and Ann complete with her high heels strolled across the room bend down and easily picked up one of young great grandchild. Being close in age I was in total awe. She truly lived a full life. My love to Sue Christie and their families.

What a privilege to have met dear Ann Crain. Mike Woodley brought her to my home when she was 101 years old and she preformed for us. I videoed the performance and posted it for her on Youtube at

and to date she has had 870 views and inspired countless people. Wonderful legacy, I'd say. Thank you Mrs Crain. Brian King, Ottawa

Dear Sue: Our deepest sympathies on the loss of your mother and gratitude for a life well-lived and the blessing that she died peacefully in her sleep. We will remember Ann for her smile, the twinkle in her eye, her keen mind and quick wit, for her strength, her independence, her feistiness, her love of music and the joy the piano brought to her life and to many who were touched by her playing over the years. I had the privilege of hearing her play for a group of seniors at St. Paul's University when she was 100! Loved her stature and those high heels! She was an amazing lady. She will be remembered for the gifts of talent, time and love she shared so generously with family, church and community. Caroline & Arnold Midgley

Mrs. Crain was always looked up to at St. Andrew's. I remember her serving at the reception that followed my mother's (Valda MacFarlane) funeral at the church and how wonderfully gracious she was.
She played the piano at the church services at the Gary J. Armstrong LTC and my father (John MacFarlane) enjoyed a chat with her after the service.
A very high bar indeed!
What a wonderful legacy to leave for her family to enjoy.
