Grady Morris Youngblood
October 24, 2024
She was stage-struck since the age of 6 when she and her twin sister, Harriet, earned $2 with their puppet show. She attended the University of Michigan, joking that she was a premed student "until I discovered chemistry."
She graduated in 1948 with a degree in theater and later joined a repertory theater in Erie, Pennsylvania. She told The Associated Press in 1993 that she got her big break while doing a cabaret act in Los Angeles, singing and telling jokes.
"Somebody said, 'Get your agent to call the new Bob Cummings show. They're looking for a funny lady.' Within three hours I had the job. That was January 1955. I had such fun with that show.
"I did a couple of pilots that didn't sell, a few movies and one year of nightclub work, which I hated. Then I did the pilot of 'The Brady Bunch' and never had to do another nightclub."
For many years after "The Brady Bunch" wound up, Davis led a quiet religious life, affiliating herself with a group led by Frey.
"I was born again," she told The Associated Press in 1993. "It happens to Episcopalians. Sometimes it doesn't hit you till you're 47 years old."
"It changed my whole life for the better. ... I spent a lot of time giving Christian witness all over the country to church groups and stuff."
She took a long sabbatical from the theater, largely limiting her performances to "Brady Bunch" specials and TV commercials.
In 1993, Davis returned to the theater, joining the touring cast of "Crazy for You," a musical featuring the songs of George and Ira Gershwin.

I think that Ann was a very classy comedienne, and was shocked to hear that she went to the same high school that I did....Strong Vincent High School, in Erie, PA. But our age difference guaranteed me that we didn't walk the halls of that school at the same time, as she was 15 years older than me. I'm glad to hear that she walked those halls before I did, giving me the privilege of although not following in her footsteps, at least walking the same hallways. I was very happy to find out that little tidbit of information tonight, because she was a very funny lady, and she didn't have to be vulgar to do it! Enjoy Heaven, Ann B. Davis! You've earned it!

I was much too young to catch the first run of the Brady Bunch, but was able to enjoy it in reruns. What I remember most is Alice's warm smile, sparkling eyes and helpful advice. All things that would not have been possible without the talent of one incredible lady. After watching TBB for years, losing Ann feels like losing a member of the family and the world feels different knowing she's not in it. She is much-loved and will forever be much-missed by millions of others who felt the comfort of Alice's presence over the years, much as the Brady kids did. She was a remarkable lady and I take comfort in knowing she is with the Lord and that if I lead a good life, I might be able to meet her someday. My thoughts, prayers and condolences go out to her family-including The Bradys. Love you Ann!

Cannot believe it. Just found out today. What a true beloved sweet actress. The show The Brady Bunch has truly a special place in my heart, despite the hateful critics. I rushed home to watch it from school every day. The best one I liked is when Alice felt she wasnt needed anymore, in season 4. truly a sweet episode that showed in the end how much she was indeed loved. Yes a script. The characters were real at heart. Her protrayal of Alice was the best. I literally have tears in my eyes typing this. God rest your soul Ann B. Davis, may God be with your family at this time. Some of these classic shows never realized how much heart they poured out to the audience after almost 44 yrs from its debut. It still will always be one of my favorite shows of all time. Good night Ann B. we all love you and miss you dearly.
