I had only been a nurse in the Emergency Department for 5 days and was a brand-new nurse. A physician asked me for an instrument to use in an intubation. I looked at him and stated, " If you could tell me what it is, what it does, what it looks like and where to find it I would be happy to get that or you". Before he could go complain, I went to Dr. Harwood and told her that I was very much aware of her standards. However, I told her that I was new and my manager just through me out here without any kind of orientation. She thanked me for my honesty and called the chief physician at the time and told him to teach me what I needed to know and to introduce me to another physician so that I would have a resource person when he was not at work. That helped me to become a very good and confident ER and Trauma nurse. For that I am forever grateful. I absolutely love Dr. Harwood.

I was a resident in the emergency medicine residency program when she was the chief of the department in 84-86. She was an amazing person, with all her accomplishments. She was instrumental in my choosing that training program and was so kind to me and mentored me, as I came from Canada and found myself living in a place where I knew no one. I only found out today about her passing from a former graduate of the program that I had not spoken to in a while. My condolences to her family and may she rest in peace.
