Ann Rafferty Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 24, 2025.
Ann Marie Rafferty, 69, of Santa Fe, New Mexico, transitioned on March 16, 2025, following a brief stay at Alive Hospice in Nashville, Tennessee, surrounded by family and listening to her favorite piano pieces. A breast cancer survivor, Ann was diagnosed in the fall of 2024 with a different cancer, rare and highly aggressive.

A Celebration of Ann Marie Rafferty's Life will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2025, from 2-5 PM at Ann's home, 1704 Agua Fria Street, Santa Fe, New Mexico. This will be an informal gathering to share remembrances of Ann (no formal service). Her sons, Colin and Nicolas, and other family members will attend. Family, friends, and acquaintances are invited to drop in anytime between 2-5 PM and stay however long you wish. Light refreshments will be provided. Parking is available on either Velarde Street or Camino de Guadalupita. Contact Teresa White with questions: [email protected].

Ann was born on September 29, 1955, in Milton, Massachusetts. After spending her early years in Massachusetts, she moved with her family to Fairlee, Vermont, in 1963. She attended Bradford Academy and Oxbow High School. She went on to study at The Hartt School of Music before attending Marlboro College, where she received her B.A. in 1977 in English Literature and Piano Performance. She wrote her thesis on "Jane Austin and the 18th Century English Novel" and studied music performance with Louis Moyse and Luis Batlle. She continued her literary studies at the University of Utah. She made her home over the years on Peaks Island, Portland, Maine; in Boston, Massachusetts; and on Whidbey Island in Washington. In 1993, she moved to the Eldorado area of Santa Fe to be near her sister Teresa and her family. For 32 years, she embraced her life in the Santa Fe/Los Alamos areas. Ann made a career with Los Alamos National Laboratories, where she was highly regarded and recognized for her contributions as an Institutional Web Project Lead until her retirement in 2023.

Many things gave Ann purpose and gratification, but most important were nurturing her beloved sons, their partners, and her namesake granddaughter Georgia Ann; supporting her nieces and nephews and their families; enjoying the company of her close circle of friends; housing and mentoring numerous Los Alamos National Laboratory interns; hiking and exploring the mesas; reading the classics and contemporary literary works; maintaining her gardens and her home on Agua Fria Street; studying the healing arts and body work; attending concerts; exploring her Irish heritage; and playing her prized grand piano. A proficient and ambitious pianist, she was rehearsing Chopin's Ballade No. 3, Op. 47 and Mazurkas, Op. 63; Notturno No. 3 by Liszt; and Rachmaninov's Prelude, Op. 32, No. 5 until she became too ill to play. A lifelong learner, she was always engaged, curious, and active. She felt blessed to have spent her last weeks enjoying the company of her newborn granddaughter, Georgia Ann, in Nashville. For those who knew her well, her wit and lively storytelling will be missed.

Ann was preceded in death by her father Francis X. Rafferty and her mother Barbara H. (Crook) Rafferty. She is survived by her sons Colin Shane and Nicolas Shane; her stepdaughter Meagan Niles; her daughter-in-law Lauren Kendall and granddaughter Georgia Ann Kendall Shane; her daughter-in-law Maisey Leschak; her siblings Frances Rafferty (Thomas Millett), Teresa White (Jon Davis), Regina Rafferty, Maura Hession, Kathleen Ell, Susan Rafferty Lehn (David Lehn), Brigid Rafferty (Jonathan Jeffreys), and Matthew Rafferty (Jacqueline). She is also survived by many beloved nephews and nieces and their families, numerous close friends, and her former husband, Scott Shane.

In addition to the July 20th Celebration of Life, a separate interment ceremony will take place on September 29, 2025, when her ashes will be put to rest beside her mother, father, and grandparents in the Milton Cemetery in Milton, Massachusetts.

Ann was an incredible person, so talented in many ways and compassionate. She was a insightful healer ahead of her time. She was a friend and so full of life. Words are not enough to describe how wonderful it was to know her.

The sincerest of condolences to your entire family. Anne helped me process my father´s cancer and eventual passing when I was only 16, lending me a Tibetan singing bowl to help my dad pass without fear or pain. I´m so sorry to hear of this loss. She will always have a significant place in my heart.

Ann was one of the most dynamic and magical woman I ever met.! I have missed her all these years since the workshop we attended together. What a powerful spirit she was, and is.
