Ann Segale Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 9, 2011.
Ann G. SEGALE 11/13/1924 ~ 10/05/2011 Daughter of William R. and Annie J. MacPherson, pioneers of the Haller Lake area north of Seattle, Ann (known as Sis to friends and family) attended Haller Lake Elementary, Lincoln High and the University of Washington. She was a proud member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority maintaining lifelong friendships with her sorority sisters. After graduation, Ann traveled cross country with girlfriends to New York City where she worked from Harlem to New Rochelle as a social worker for Catholic Charities. Returning to Seattle in the late 1940's, she launched a successful career in Real Estate with her father and three brothers at the family firm, MacPherson Realtors. Ann met the love of her life Ray Segale, on a blind date and they settled in Gerhart Oregon where Ray coached football at Astoria High School. In 1954 Ann and Ray moved back to Seattle with their young family. Ray helped open Blanchet High School and Ann ventured into home building running two crews of men. She built traditional Early American homes designed by architect Elizabeth Ayer and was awarded the Seattle Times Home of the Month award in 1968. Truly unique and entrepreneurial, Ann was a woman ahead of her time. She embraced the challenges of life as a single mother when her husband Ray died in 1961.Ann successfully raised four young children while continuing to build homes and work with MacPherson's Real Estate. The greatest tributes to Ann's life are her four children and four grandchildren. She taught us to learn from every experience, share knowledge, and embrace change and adventure. We are richer for her loyalty, and love. Ann was preceded in death by husband Ray Segale, brothers Bill and Tom MacPherson and her beloved son, Charles Segale. She is survived by her brother, Murdock MacPherson, her children Ray Segale, Mary Woodbury, and Joan Albee, her grandchildren Annie Albee, Andrew Albee, Steve Snider and Chris Snider, and her extended family and friends. Please join her family for a celebration of Ann's life Sunday, October 16th 3:00pm at Anthony's Home Port Shilshole 6135 Seaview Avenue Northwest, Seattle, WA 98107. In lieu of flowers please donate to The Audubon Society.

Such fond memories of Sister!! I said she was a neighbor but, she was more like family to me growing up at Haller Lake. The Segales and MacPhersons were all part of what I considered the family compound at Haller Lake. All the women in the compound were strong and wonderful women who were all part of my growing up. I wore a path to each and every home and delighted in spending time with them. I couldn't imagine having a better childhood. Sister was so full of life and energy. I remember her challenging me for a race across the field where she and Ray would later build their home. I don't remember who won, but I do remember that was typical of Sister who always was young at heart. Remembering each of these dear ladies (my grandma, my mom, aunt Rita, Nana Mac, Nellie, Sister and Dorothy) brings a tear to my eyes and yet a gladness to have had them in my life. They all brought such joy to me and are missed and will never be forgotten. May the Lord wrap His arms around you as you remember your times spent with those who loved you too.

Couple years ago, I encountered Ann after she had just purchased a chocolate milkshake for her lunch. She was so happy about it! She relished it with such zest. I told my husband, "This woman brought so much life to an entire generation at our grade school!" She was an inspiration. She was coach, confidant, champion, surrogate mom, and friend. All of us are better for having known her. We will miss her big, engaging smile but will treasure the memory of that smile forever.

Sis was a great baseball buddy. She, Sally Flood, my mother-in-law, and I spend many seasons at the Kingdome and later Safeco Field together. When the baseball was bad, it was the camaraderie that kept us going. When the baseball was good, we were like little kids enjoying every little piece of the game. Will never forget our first trip to spring training. Sis was smart, sassy, and a good friend. She will be missed.

I knew Ann for a brief 42 years. She brought a silent grace and stength to the conversation to life, never rushing to add her thoughts, but listening. She raised four wonderful children, whom I call friends/family and think of often in times of struggle. The passing of such a quality person is always difficult, but her strength, pioneering achievements, advice and love are enduring gifts which should be celebrated.

I see two young girls rampaging through the woods of North Seattle, looking towards the sound...

We all share in the beauty of Ann, and the times which are recorded for each of us, uniquely.

Sister was wise and wonderful! Like her mom, Nana Mac, Sister was an independent, thoughful, courageous, unpretentious, entrepreneur. Sister was an advocate for those who needed her down to earth wisdom and love to help them along the way. I will never forget the many memories of growing up in what I called the family compound made up of my family, the Lagerstroms (including my grandma), the Laings, the MacPhersons and the Segale family. My hope looks forward to re-connecting in heaven.
4 events I'd like to share about Sister:
When I was in elementary school and Sister was newly married, she challenged me to a race across the field (always a kid at heart and an athlete). In the winter when Haller Lake froze over, Sister would tie a rope betwee the MacPherson dock and ours and test out the thickness of the ice by skating between the 2 docks close to the rope. I'll never forget Sister helping my mom sell my grandma's house when it seemed impossible to remove a renter. I will always be appreciative of how kind Sister was to both my mom (Dorothy) and aunt Rita as they aged as widows in their homes on Haller Lake.
With love, Sally Lagerstrom Zimmerman

I was previleged to meet Mrs. Segale through her niece Mimi. She always had a smile on her face and was truly interested in those she was talking with. I look back to my days at Christ the King and I believe she was the one who took us to track one day driving on 125th and said, "this was once a roller coaster". How she could get us to laugh. She brought fun to everything she was involved with and taught me there is always a part of any sport anyone can be involved in; player or fan. This world is a better place because of all she touched. If we could all take one thing she did and continue it on; what a legacy. We will miss you. RIP.

She truly was an amazing woman. Her personal inner strength and passion for everything she invested in was evident. I would say she epitomized groundedness. She was and is a legend who touched and inspired many lives.

I have only the fondest of fondest memories of Sister going back to the early '50s. And I bet I'm not the only one to be surprised of her gift of daffodils garnered from the "thinning pile" of a local cemetery? Sister found the GOOD in everything. So many fun memories . . .

I am enriched by having only spent 48 hours as a weekend Caregiver to Mrs. Segale. A few hours that I would welcome to re-live again and again and again. She inspires and touches lives of all that she meets. There are a few people in this world who can positively affect people like she did...and Mrs. Segale was one of them. In my opinion, The world has lost an icon. I will miss her. MD

Ann....my kind of gal. She liked the friends of her children and encouraged lifelong friendships. My life is enriched because she wanted Joanie to visit my family in Nebraska; knowing it would create great memories. I am honored to be the recepient of lasting memories because she "got" the 3 F's....friendship, family, and football.

Ann taught me things she will never know, and that I will never forget. She opened my eyes, and taught me to see through hers. I am so glad our paths crossed, and will remember her always. She will be missed. My condolences to her family and friends. Beckie@Ida

Ann Segale was one of the most influential women in my life. As the leader of "Great Books" discussions and my coach at Christ the King and Blanchet, she taught us that women can do anything. My thanks to her family for sharing her with the rest of us. Mary Ann Carr

What Sis taught me.
How to spot an eagle, snow geese, night huron.
How to watch the quarter back.
The rising full moon from the dock at Magnussen Park.
How to catch squirrels and take them to Bellevue.
How to raise lilies. Hope the people now in her home appreciate what she planted.
My friend Sister could do anything and everything. I miss her.

There is no limit to the things I could write about my mom, but her love of people and curiosity about them was so wonderful. She was truly interested in each person's story and paid rapt attention as she spoke with them. Her crazy sense of adventure and competitivness too...oh my the stories I can tell you! I love her so much and can't believe she's gone.
