Annie Murray Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 9 to Dec. 10, 2010.
May 5, 1923 -- December 6, 2010. Born in Polk, North Carolina, to Gilbert Erskine and Annie Rowan Kidd, Mom was raised in Lexington, Va., by her mother following the early death of her father, a Presbyterian minister. Following graduation from Mary Washington College, she met and married Jack Godfrey Murray who was attending Washington & Lee University following World War II service as a B-24 bombardier. Drafted again for the Korean conflict, Jack decided to make the U.S. Air Force a career, and they traveled the world, serving time in Tripoli, California, Arkansas, Virginia, South Carolina, Pittsburgh and Germany and back to Virginia, before finally retiring in Texas. Jack then entered the Episcopal Seminary and was rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Nacogdoches at the time of his death in 1982. Koonah continued to live in Nacogdoches for years, becoming a member of the Nacogdoches Club, serving on the vestry at her church and enjoying time with her many friends in Nacogdoches, including The Ladies of The Evening, a supper club with a passion for seeking out fine dining in the local area, a quest that kept them busy. She was an avid bridge player and loved to volunteer. As her health began to deteriorate, she moved to Fort Worth to be closer to her grandchildren and spent her final months getting to know her first great-granddaughter. She was a wonderful mother who will be missed, not only by her family, but also her many friends from East Texas. Her family wishes to express their thanks to the residents and staff at Town Village Ridgmar and Sterling House of Watauga for the care shown to Mom, and a special thanks to Heart to Heart Hospice, especially Rylinda, Jeanette and Faye, for developing special bonds in an above and beyond manner the past six weeks. The journey would not have been complete without them. Koonah is survived by her sons, Jeff Murray and wife, Janie, of Fort Worth, Kirk Murray and wife, Debbie, of Loveland, Ohio, and Bobby Murray and wife, Theresa, of Bastrop; and her daughter, Ellen Macaulay and husband, Dr. Kent Macaulay, of Round Rock. In addition she is also survived by her granddaughters, Laura Murray and fiancŽ, Roger Koscielniak, of Ennis, Jacqueline Murray and Elizabeth Murray of Fort Worth, and Amanda Hoffman and husband, Matt Hoffman, of Roanoke, Va.; and grandsons, Bryan Murray and wife, Jamie, of West Chester, Ohio, and John and Patrick Richardson of Bastrop. Her great-granddaughter, Avery Rowan Koscielniak, was born in July and brought Mom much joy as only a great-grandchild can. Memorial services will be held early next year at Christ Episcopal Church in Nacogdoches. There will be no funeral and arrangements are being handled by Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors in Nacogdoches. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 502 E. Starr Ave., Nacogdoches, Texas 75961-4052; or Heart to Heart Hospice, 5608 Malvey St., Suite 200, Fort Worth, Texas 76107. Online condolences accepted at www.casonmonk-metcalf.com. I loved Koonah whom I knew at Christ Church. During her last several years living in Nacogdoches we would often sit together during the service. I enjoyed bringing her to church when she was up to it. I visited her at home several times and always enjoyed the conversation and the comfortable living room. Koonah was a good conversationalist and told good stories. She was just a pleasure to know. Since I came to Nac in 1989 I never had the pleasure of knowing the Rev. Jack. With love, Jill Carrington

When I heard today about Koonah's passing I was filled with memories. Jack and Koonah were very speciai in my life. I went to them for wisdom and friendship. May God be with you at this time. May Koonah be surrounded by God's perfect light and peace.

Jeff, Kirk, Bob & Ellen--I just got the notice of your mother's death and wanted to express my sympathy to all of you. Your father and I were seminary classmates and good friends and I will long remember the good times that the Murrays and the Cooks had together in Austin. Please know you are in my prayers. Jeff, Kirk, Bob and Ellen, Your Mom was a wonderful lady!! My life was blessed by getting to know her through LOVE INC. Although I am no longer there Audrey called me and told me about Ms Koonah. She made me laugh and I think about her often.

I know she was so proud of her children and her grandchildren. She always talked of you. That being said...she had her own mind and I have laughed many times over her explaining her driving record. It was an honor to work with her and to be able to help you all when you needed it.

I will always remember her...the cat on the table....and all that needle work she had. A great lady.

Love and prayers for all of you,

Thank you for allowing me with opportunity to know Koonah and your family. I was blessed and honored to care for her. Koonah had a special sense of humor and grace. I will cherish my memories of her. And I cant wait to try making "Koonah burgers!"

Jeff, Kirk, Bob and Ellen,
Your parents were such an integral part of my life at Christ Church Nacogdoches. And Koonah, to me, was the epitome of love and grace. I cherish my memories and am thankful to have had the privilege of knowing and loving her. To each of you - love and prayers. Patty Cunningham - Arlington, TX
