ANTHONY AGUANNO Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 24, 2017.
Anthony Aguanno Founder of Denville Seafood and 'jack of all trades' Anthony Aguanno passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, in the comfort of his home, on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017. He was 92 years young. Public visitation will be held on Monday, Sept. 25, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at Norman Dean Home for Services, 16 Righter Ave., Denville, N.J. 07834. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, Sept, 26, at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's R.C. Church, 15 Myers Ave., Denville. Burial will follow at Denville Cemetery, Denville. Born in Palermo, Sicily, to the late Giuseppe and Maria, Anthony and his family came to the U.S. through Ellis Island when he was two years old. Growing up, Anthony was an avid roller-skater and had a love of airplanes. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. After being discharged, he attended Albright College in Pennsylvania before meeting his soulmate, Ann Georgia. In 1951, they opened Denville Seafood as a small fish market that has expanded to include Codmother's Cafe, a fixture in our town. Although Anthony loved his fish store, he had many hobbies, including gardening, fishing, golfing, running, and flying planes. Anthony was the jack of all trades - there wasn't anything he couldn't accomplish once he put his mind to it. He was a member of Indian Lake Community Club, St. Mary's Church, and VFW 2519. He was a hard-working, funny, and caring man, husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will never be forgotten. Tony was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ann, in 2001, and his brother, Vincent "Jimmy." Left to keep his legacy alive are his loving children, Mary (Andres) Aguanno-Pustroem, Joseph (Terry) Aguanno, and Amy (Jeffry) McEntee, along with his cherished grandchildren, Michael Pustroem, Adam and Emily Aguanno, and Annabel and Jillian McEntee. Anthony is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends. Memorial donations are being accepted by Paws and Stripes by way of inmemoryof-memorial.org. Aguanno Family,
My deepest condolences for your loss. May you cherish fond memories! I saw your Dad more in the restaurant than outside as I'm his neighbor. We chatted a bit before he took his nap on the bench. Very cute & sweet man. May he RIP

I met this wonderful man 30 years ago My wife and I were new to the area. His store became part of our weekends. We are black. He always had a smile for us. Soon he know what we wanted and we felt at home. This was a man that had to know the Lord. Because that's how he treated everyone. He brought joy !

Dear Mary, Joe and Amy--

I was so saddened by the news of your Dad's "passing." Yes, he was "young at heart." Not only was he a friendly man, his smile always brightened the streets of Denville--He was also a "Birthday Mate" of mine--as we were both born on July 4th.

My memories of your Dad go way back to when I was a little girl--in the early, early 1960's. Walking into "Tony's," more commonly known as "Denville Seafood," my brothers and I, when we were about ages 4, 3 and 2, would be so excited to be handed a paper cone cup of ice chips to suck on and to quench or thirst, while my Mom would choose between Flounder, Cod, Snapper, and Bass.

As my brothers and I grew older and had weekly Friday afternoon piano lessons, we knew that afterwards we would order the fried clam, or shrimp, or scallop dinners and as we picked them up your Dad's everlasting smile would brighten our day again...

I remember one time when we grew a little older, I was 11, and my brother's were 10 and 9, we had just come back from a week's vacation in Wildwood, and told your Dad about how had found clams right on the beach--we were with another family who had 7 kids. So together on the beach we put our 100 of clams in a bucket, steamed them, added some lemon and ketsup, and then all 15 of us sat by the beach eating our own catch of clams. Excited to be back at home after that vacation, we, my brothers and I, told your Dad, "We don't have to always get our clams from you. We caught our own clams in Wildwood."
Your Dad then said, "where," and when we replied, "in Wildwood Crest," He told us that "less than a mile away was a sewerage company--and that we had a possibility of contracting Hepititis."
My Dad then had to give us all shots of Hemoglobien for prevention. That put an end to our collecting our own clams on vacation...and we were then quite happy to buy them at Denville Seafood.

Now that we are older, adults now, in our late fifties, and as Denville Seafood became known as "The Codmother's Café," one of the best seafood restaurants in the area...It is now exciting to see Tony's children, Mary, Joe, and Amy running the business so responsibly, which to me a see as a wonderful sign that Tony and his Wife Ann, instilled a fine "work ethic" to his children...My heart mourns the "passing" of your Dad--a good friend, who as vital and energetic until the end...Just last summer I remember meeting Tony as the Denville Recycling Depot, dropping off papers, etc. from Mary's home and also from the store...He looked so happy--and yes that forever glowing smile was still on his face...

God has given us a life span of 70 and 80 years if we are strong. May you celebrate a life well lived and loved by many. Psalms 90:10

Tony always took the time to chat with me...about any subject. We would frequently see each other around the store. We had been friends since the late '80s, a time when friends actually listened to each other.
