Anthony FIORELLO Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 16, 2019.
Anthony G. Fiorello II passed away on July 14, 2019, in Palm Harbor, Florida, after a long illness.

He was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to the late Anthony Fiorello, Sr., and Elizabeth (Rich) Fiorello. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Fiorello.

Anthony is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lillian Ruth (Gledhill) Fiorello, daughter Catherine Fiorello and her husband Keith Burton and son Derek Burton, son Anthony Fiorello III and his wife Rebekah Register Fiorello and son Anthony IV and daughter Katie, son Michael Fiorello and his husband Alex Lugo, sister Dr. Gladys (Fiorello) Gress, sister-in-law Rose (Colangelo) Fiorello, sister-in-law Vivian (Gledhill) Wakeley, and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, Alderman Road, Palm Harbor, on August 24 at 10:00 a.m.

Anthony spent his youth in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He attended Fairfield Prep, graduated from Central High School, and joined the Army in 1954. He achieved the rank of corporal, continued to serve as a reservist, and was honorably discharged in 1961.

He worked in the computer field for many years, culminating in a 26-year tenure at Pitney Bowes, where he also served on the Main Council for many years.

Anthony made his home in Stratford, Connecticut, where he was a dedicated father and community member. He volunteered in leadership roles with Indian Guides, Boy Scouts, and St. Mark Catholic Church.

Anthony was a devoted husband, and Tony and Ruth were avid travelers throughout their marriage. Favorite destinations include Taormina (Sicily), Maui, and their summer cottage on Gardner Lake in Salem, Connecticut. Tony was known to the lake community as a handyman, fisherman, and formidable card player.

In retirement, Anthony was known as "Mister Tony" by the students of Eli Whitney Elementary School in Stratford, where he was a beloved crossing guard.

After Tony and Ruth moved to Palm Harbor, they became involved in community theater to great comic effect. Tony worked as a boat captain and served on the Highland Lakes community watch.

Tony cared for Ruth until she entered the memory care unit of The Watermark at Trinity.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Moffitt Cancer Center, or The Hospice of the Florida Suncoast.

Thanks to all of you who expressed kind thoughts in this space, by phone, through the mail, and in person. We are gratified that so many others saw our father as the giving man we knew him to be, the outpouring has been overwhelming, - Mike, Tony, and Cathy Fiorello

We are so very sad that we will no longer see Tony's smile on our walks in the neighborhood or at our Timberlake Village functions. Your Mom and Dad were such a pleasure to know, and your Dad was the neighborhood dog whisperer...they ran to greet him whenever he was in sight. We shall miss them both. Our deepest sympathy to the Fiorello family.

Tony was a beautiful man. He can never be replaced but hopefully he can be followed. His path was a good one.

I am president of Little Theater here in Highland Lakes. I came to know Tony about 5 years ago. Tony was an incredible and inspirational man to work with. Even though he was going through treatments for his cancer, he would never missed a rehearsal when he was acting in a play. He was an excellent actor. The last 2 years he took over designing and making sets for our plays. He designed some amazing sets for us. I would often tell him I loved him because he got things done and never complained. Little Theater has decided to name an annual award in his name. The Fiorello award will be presented to the person that best exhibits a sense of friendship, unselfish commitment, and spirit.

God bless you Tony, you will be missed.
