ANTHONY GAESS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 7 to Nov. 11, 2022.
Anthony D Gaess (Tony) was born on October 11, 1939, the second of five children born to Marjorie Gaess Frei and William C Gaess Jr, who raised their children in Hillsdale, NJ. His older brother, William, and younger brother, Jeffrey, predeceased him. His two sisters, Susan Kiley and Linda Rinko and their families live in New Jersey. His half brother, Billy Gaess IV, and sister, Chantry Marchand, both reside in Rhode Island.

Tony married his childhood friend, Judie Clark, in 1966. Their union produced a daughter, Kimberly Rose and a son, Jordan Anthony who lives in California with his wife, Allison. Jordan and Allison gave Tony a granddaughter, Indica Rose and a grandson, Judah Anthony. After Tony and Judie's marriage ended in divorce, he then married his girlfriend, Claire Seiberth. In summary, Anthony D Gaess is survived by his two sisters, a half brother and sister, two ex-wives, his son and daughter-in-law, his two grandchildren, his 100 year old mother-in-law, Phyllis Clark and many Gaess cousins, nieces and nephews.

Tony's elementary school years began at the George G White School in Hillsdale and the Englewood School for Boys. He attended Pascack Valley High School (class of '59) but completed his high school education by graduating from the Saddle River Country Day School in Saddle River, NJ. Tony went on to further his education at one of the oldest colleges in the U.S. ~ Tusculum University in Greenville, Tennessee where he became an honorary member of the Board of Trustees. He started and maintained an endowment for deserving Tusculum students in memory of his daughter, Kimberly Rose Gaess.

Tony was a self made entrepreneur starting his own small business in 1964 which he personally developed into one of the only major environmental liquid waste companies in the U.S. He eventually sold this business to Waste Management Environmental Services, a major NYSE traded company.

After his father's death, Tony picked up the crumbling pieces of an outdoor advertising business started by his grandfather, William Sr. Tony and his brother, Jeffrey, resurrected Gaess Outdoor making it a recognized and successful outdoor advertising company, once again. Gaess Outdoor was eventually sold to Clear Channel, the largest outdoor advertising company worldwide.

Tony Gaess was a "one of a kind" amazing man who overcame many personal challenges in his life. He was a valiant survivor and true visionary who rose above adversity while always maintaining focus on reaching higher goals in life and in business. Tony was the person everyone turned to in times of need or direction. He was always the "life of every party", a quick witted, funny man who gladly shared a joke and his good fortune with all his family and friends. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all the lives he touched in so many ways.

After bravely battling multiple myeloma cancer for over fifteen years, Tony was called Home on October 20th 2022, just days after his 83rd birthday. Respecting Tony's wishes, no memorial service is being planned . . rather he hoped to leave the good memories shared with all those he loved.

Tony like to laugh, he liked to have a good time, and he wanted those around him to have a good time, which he often enabled. And Tony was tough. He was tough in business and he was tough as he fought his battle with cancer.
Tony leaves a legacy of generosity, fun-loving and success behind. He was unique, he was a good friend and he will be missed.

Throughout my early childhood I always looked up to Tony. He was always cheerful, positive, and a guiding influence to me when I was young. I've always felt close to him and always will. He was truly one of a kind.

Fifty nine years ago i watched JFK's funeral service with Tony at the Clark residence in Hillsdale with Judie and Kathy. His charisma dazzled me at the time and never really dimmed through the years.
Reggie Jackson, a famous NYY baseball hero, once arrogantly described his impact upon the team as being "the straw that stirs the drink". In my lifetime Tony remained the straw that stirred the drink in every room i shared with him, in every conversation we had and in every memory of the times we experienced together. i am proud that he considered me a friend until the end, a fact he confirmed in August when we spoke and exchanged email messages.
Tony's many accomplishments derived from his exceptional skill as a listener. He listened and learned and connected the lessons in all different situations. Yes, he could be compulsive and stubborn too, but his successes and the many projects he initiated and completed were the product of his skill, focus and the lessons he applied from absorbing information from every source, however humble or powerful.
The experience of sharing friendship with Tony will remain with me always, accompanied by a smile and a distinctive tingle that resonates after six decades.
ADG was one very special individual.

It's on a sad day that Tony left this Earth.
Wonderful day for Heaven. Tony and Judie helped so many people in their lives, especially me. I remember all the amazing things he's done and built. Always up for a challenge. Always upbeat. He will be truly missed.
