A j Gregor was a polymath and original thinker in political theory , intellectual history , the history of ideas , Marxism, populism . He covered every subject with the highest standards of scholarship . He was committed to the defence of free societies . His work stands as a monument to his brilliance and originality.

Greatest Fascism historian of all time.

I was a student of Dr. Gregor's at Berkeley in 2008. Always admired his confidence, his political courage and his vast knowledge on subject matter few scholars feared to tread. He was one of a kind and I will always be proud to have been his student.

Dear Professor Chang, I extend my sincere condolences to you on the one month anniversary of Professor Gregor's passing. Although I never had the honor of meeting Professor Gregor, we communicated numerous times through emails and phone conversations during my years of being a member of the Political Science Department. He was always so pleasant and excited about his latest works. He will be remembered for his great contributions and dedication to the world of Political Science.

To the family of Dr. Gregor,

I was a student of Dr. Gregor at U.C. Berkeley in the early 70's. My deepest sympathies for your loss.

Dr. Gregor was a masterful and inspirinig teacher, and a man of amazing intellect. He will be greatly missed. I had the honor of taking four classes from him, all of which contributed significantly to my intellecutal development and my understanding of politics and world affairs.

A stalwart, knightly figure. Always controversial, always inspirational, always defiant. Acerbic and lyrical at the same time. Supremely rational and incorrigibly poetic. One of a kind. This is how the steel was tempered. Professor Gregor will be forever remembered and sorely missed.

Dear Professor Chang,

I was a student at UC Berkeley from 1978-81 majoring in Political Science. Beginning the Summer quarter, 1978, the first class I attended was Poli Sci 3 Scope and Methods with Professor Gregor. The moment he entered the classroom whistling Grieg's In of the Mountain King (you know, the Troll song) delivering an extemporaneous lecture on knowledge, truth and logic with such eloquent brilliance, I was floored. The professory was brilliant, witty, and so kind. Professor Gregor introduced the class to social science methodology and statistics with Rosenthal and Jacobson's Pygmalion in the Classroom!! Brilliant!!

He so inspired me that I proceeded to take every class the esteemed professor taught from Intro to Marxism to Italian Fascism, and Contemporary Twentieth Century Radical Ideology and Revolution.

Besides explaining Hegel to us little minds, he exposed us to Ludwig Gumplowicz, Roberto Michels, George Sorel, and numerous unknown Italian Intellectuals, such as Sergio Panunzio, whose works foretold the tumultuous Twentieth Century.

The professor wrote Introduction to Metapolitics, explaining linguistic and analytic analysis to us little minds. His work on Italian Fascism and Comparative Politics, while perhaps controversial at the time, of course, because of his thorough research and writing, over time, proved worthy of becoming the consensus of basic academic knowledge. Professor Gregor was truly a uniquely gifted thinker, writer, and academic who will be sorely missed.

I am so sorry at his passing. My only solace is that I somehow mustered the courage to e-mail him on May 18, 2019 offering a word of thanks for his life'swork. And I will always be thankful that he responded within minutes kindly and gently.

Professor Gregor, I will always be in debt to your magnificent academic work and words encouragement to a student you influenced throughout his mediocre life. There is so much more I could say, but for now, I will close: Reposare in pace, my lifelong teacher.
