I'm listening to Jocko Willinks podcast about Herbert's book. What a great guy. Legend of humanity. His family should be forever proud of this man. The US army and armies around the world should model leadership training around this man.

I met Colonel Herbert in Viet-Nam. I served with a lot of men that were in Col. Herbert's 2nd Bn. To the man, his men luved and admired him. They would follow h anywhere. I heard more than once about how they would be on a 5 or 6 man ambush and all of a sudden they'd hav an extra man and that man would be Colonel Herbert. He kept his men alive and able to hold their heads high. There were no war crimes in Colonel Herbert's AO.

I read "Soldier" 3 times in my youth. It was a very important book for me & formed a template for the type of leader I should try to be. It also gave me a view into the window of the politics that exists in the Officer Corp that I would witness when I received my commission. A Mentor whom I wished I had met. RIP LTC Herbert. Yours was truly an American story.

My sympathies to the Herbert Family, on the passing of one of the true heroes in our nations history.
His valor in combat and for his moral courage have seldom if ever been equaled. His love of his country and for the standards and beliefs our nation was founded on will be an inspiration for all Americans for All time.
