Anthony Lundy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 5 to Dec. 10, 2007.
THE wife of a railway worker who died after being struck by a train has paid tribute to her “caring gentleman” of a husband.

Popular Anthony Lundy, known to family and friends as Tony, died on Thursday last week at 5am.

The maintenance worker for Network Rail was finishing cleaning up at the end of his shift when a 60mph train close to Napier Road, Central Reading, struck him.

Mr Lundy, of Westfield Road in Caversham, was a well-known regular at The Fox and Hounds in Gosbrook Road, just minutes from his home.

His grieving widow Susan, 58, a sales assistant, remembered Mr Lundy as a loving and caring man.

She told the Evening Post: “Everybody always said he would do a kindness for anybody. He was such a caring gentleman.

“He would do anything for anybody.

“You would never hear Tony say a bad word about anybody.”

Mr Lundy worked as an engineer on the railway, although Mrs Lundy confessed she was not entirely sure what his job entailed.

One thing she did know was he was a hard worker and loved what he did. She continued: “He loved his job.

“He would always be smiling when he came home from work.”

The 62-year-old was born in County Mayo, on the west coast of Ireland, although he had lived in Reading for nearly two decades.

He met Susan at the Irish Club in Chatham Street 17 years ago. At the time he was just visiting Reading – but after meeting Mrs Lundy he decided to stick around.

“I was the love of his life – but he said he was drunk when I met him,” she joked. “We did not have children. He met me and that was it. We married 13 years ago.”

Mr Lundy counted history and DIY among his interests. Mrs Lundy said: “He was very interested in history but you would never think it to look at him.

“Anything historical he liked. He liked historical buildings. He also enjoyed doing the house up, making it look nice. He would turn his hand to anything.”

At the moment members of Mr Lundy’s family, including his brother Patrick, are supporting his widow.

A true Irishman, he kept in touch with his Celtic roots. Mrs Lundy – who was born in the house in Caversham where she still lives – added: “He really supported the rugby back home, and the Irish rugby too. He kept in contact with people in Ireland. He had a lot of friends in Reading and Ireland.”
