Anthony, "Tony" J. Mauriello - age 78, husband of the late Marion M. (Murray) Mauriello died peacefully Friday, January 19 at Lahey Hospital with his family at his side.
He was born in Grotolella, Italy, January 27, 1945, a son of the late Vincenzo and the late Lauretta Mauriello and was raised in
Cambridge, MA. He later moved to Billerica where he resided for 50 years.
Tony was a loving and devoted husband to Marion. After her passing, he reminisced about their 50 years together every day, and there was not a moment that he did not miss her. Together, they raised two daughters: Leslie and Lisa of Belmont and Bedford, respectively. Lisa's husband Boey was not only a son-in-law to Tony, but also a close friend.
He graduated from Northeastern University and became a talented Engineer, enjoying a long career at Lucent Technologies. There, he made many friends and welcomed being a mentor to colleagues earlier in their careers.
Tony loved a home project, big or small, and you could often find him toiling in his garage amongst every tool imaginable. In the warmer months he spent hours in his yard, planting flowers and ensuring the landscape looked beautiful. He was passionate about his garden, particularly his tomatoes, and found it frustrating but humorous that year over year, despite improvements to his fences, the local wildlife enjoyed the many vegetables he lovingly grew.
He was quite the athlete, even in adulthood, playing tennis, basketball, and softball, until his rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis in his early fifties. A close friend turned him on to golf, and he quickly fell in love with the sport. He continued to play golf well into his late seventies with friends and his brother, Gino.
Leslie and Lisa know that they could not have had a more devoted father. Tony loved the hours he spent helping them with homework, teaching them how to play sports, coaching their softball teams, and helping them with projects in their own homes. He was a proud and loving "Papa" to his grandchildren Phoenix, Nova, and Julian, who brought him immense joy, and they adored him. Tony shared the hobbies he loved with his grandkids: planting the garden together, and teaching them how to play baseball, basketball, and golf. He never missed their soccer practices, baseball games, or dance recitals, and was always excited for an outing, especially to the beach. And when a toy broke, the kids knew that "Papa can fix it".
Tony was grateful for his large family, which he loved deeply. He also cherished many longtime friendships. He treasured gatherings with family and friends where he honed his photography skills, taking thousands of pictures of his favorite subjects. He often looked at these photos, and it brought him so much happiness to remember these special moments with his loved ones.
Tony was blessed with three brothers, his best friends, and their spouses: Oscar "Nino" and wife Rosemarie of Billerica, Gerry and wife Evelyn of Billerica, and Gino of Woburn and partner Michelle Albanese of Milton. He dearly missed his in-laws Anne "Dede" and William Foley of Billerica, and Rose Mauriello of Woburn.
Tony was uncle and confidant to: the late Richard Foley, Steven Judge and wife Kim, Marion (Foley) and husband Keith Sullivan, Michael Foley and wife Kathleen, W. Gregory Foley and wife Amanda, Christopher Foley and wife Kellie, Jeffrey Foley, John Mauriello and wife Wendy, the late Frank Mauriello, Laura Mauriello and partner Tomer Blechman, Alyssa (Mauriello) and husband Mike Felicetta, and Tianna Mauriello. He was a great-uncle to his beloved grand nieces and nephews: Nicholas, Steven, Cole, Ava, Shay, Katharine, Liam, Finn, Anthony, Liliella, Lily-Anne, Maeve, Grace, Keaghan, Julien, Conor, Reilly, Emma, Gaia, and Levi.
Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home, 66 Concord Rd., Billerica from 4-7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday at St. Matthew the Evangelist Parish at St. Theresa Church at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to
