Anthony Piccolo Obituary

Published by Connecticut Post on Sep. 19, 2014.
Piccolo, Anthony J.
Anthony "Tony" J. Piccolo, 68, of Shelton, entered into rest on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport. He is the beloved husband of Rose (Bunosso) Piccolo. Tony was born in Bridgeport on November 10, 1945, son of the late Salvatore Piccolo Sr. and Anna (Oliva) Piccolo, and was a lifelong Valley resident. He graduated with his bachelors from SCSU and earned his 6th year degree from Sacred Heart University. In his youth, he served as a volunteer firefighter with the Echo Hose Company in Shelton. Pic had a long and distinguished career teaching and coaching in the Valley. He was an educator for 35 years in the Shelton Public School system, beginning as a Social Studies teacher and then serving as the House Headmaster before he retired in 2004. He started coaching both baseball and football at Shelton, as well as freshman football at Yale, before his interests turned to softball. Pic coached the SHS softball team from 1980 to 1990, winning three conference championships and was named Coach of the Year twice. He went on to serve as an assistant coach at Masuk and Seymour, then as coach of Ansonia High School. He was hired as Ansonia HS Athletic Director until he retired again this June. Pic was a founding member of the CT Softball Hall of Fame and former Chairman of the CT Interscholastic Athletic Conference Softball Committee. He was inducted in 2003 as an honorary member of the CT Scholastic and Collegiate Softball Hall of Fame. Pic also served unofficially as a mentor for many of the current high school coaches in the Valley. Pic was also a founder of the PeeWee Division of Pop Warner football in Shelton. A longtime member of St. Joseph's Church in Shelton, he served there as a Eucharistic Minister. Pic was also a longtime avid Yankee fan. He is the beloved father of Brian Piccolo and his wife Stephanie, Kristin Dorosh and her husband John, Tracy Brancucio, and Michele Piccolo. He also leaves a sister, Louise Picciotti and her husband Robert, six cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth, Edward, Anthony, Mia, Michael, and Harrison, and special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Salvatore Piccolo Jr., and Michael Piccolo. Friends may greet the family at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton, on Sunday from 2 to 6 PM, and are invited to meet directly at St. Joseph Church, 50 Fairmont Place, Shelton on Monday for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at Mt. St. Peters Cemetery in Derby. Memorial contributions are requested to the Anthony J. Piccolo Scholarship Fund, intended to benefit high school athletes, through the funeral director. Online condolences can be offered at www.riverviewfh.com.

Kristin and Brian- Your father was one of my favorite teachers, coaches, and mentors since meeting him my first day of school in 7th grade. I would later have him as a coach and some once to talk to when my own dad was very sick. I hope you both hang on to those memories you will cherish always. Be well. God Speed Pasta

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family during this very difficult time. Heaven has gained a beautiful angel. Tony left a footprint in many peoples lives and one of those lives was mine. I met him when I was very young and he will always hold a special place in my heart. He taught me to have faith in my self, to be confident, strong and to know that i was loved. He was not only a wonderful teacher but a great mentor. It's been many years since I lived in Shelton, but he was someone that I will never forget. I send my love to the entire family. I know he will be always be with all of you.

"What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget."
I'll always remember how you laughed when I called and asked you to scrimmage because you were down south and we still had snow on the ground? You will be missed! Rest in Peace my friend... Bev Lowden~ Thomaston H.S. softball
