ANTHONY J. PIVIROTTO

In the early 1950s, I first came to know Tony as the neighbor whose friends, mainly from Halket Street, all wore ties to school! Back then, he was called "Farmer", because he had cleared the overgrown field behind the family garage and created a thriving vegetable garden out of it. He was the big brother to my surrogate sister, Penny, and a friend of my brother, Bob. My mom, Rae, was close friends with his mom, so we were almost family, although Duke never quite saw it that way. When he was dating Barb, Penny would tease Tony for spending so much time looking into the mirror, teasing his every hair into place.
Here's a photo of Tony, Bob and I, taken on the beach in Atlantic City, in 1953, just before they grabbed me by my arms and legs and were swinging a terrified eleven- year-old me back and forth, threatening to throw me in the ocean. Thanks, Tony, for such sweet, indelible memories! My condolences to his family and friends for their loss. Though Tony is gone to eyes and ears, he is ever alive in our hearts, where he remains an eternal child, playing an eternal game, in an eternal garden.

Dear Barb and family,

I am so sorry to hear of Tony's passing he was one of the good guys and I have so many good and warm memories of us growing up in Oakland and I would always try to follow the boys but they always could find a way to ditch me. They wanted no part of little girls following and getting in the way of a good baseball game.
Uncle Phil called when he heard about Tony such a sad time for everyone my heart and prayers go out to you and the family. I will always remember the fun we had, one day Duke the dog (Tonys) got into the yard at 307 and Tony was chasing him and almost caught him before he snatched my little green peep from Easter. Duke was lucky that day because my Gram was running after him and Tony along with her if we only had a video then. They caught him too late.Poor Duke was banned from 307 never to return. I was fortunate to see Tony on my trips home to Pittsburgh and it meant so much. He will be missed by all who knew him, I will always remember you Barb in my prayers.

My deepest sympathy to the entire Pivirotto family. Tony sold me my bar 17 years ago and we had a wonderful working relationship and a mutual respect for one another. He will be missed.
