Anthony Raneri Obituary
Born in Portchester, NY, in 1945, Anthony was the son of Anthony and Sylvia Raneri. He attended Archbishop Stepinac High School and pursued a degree in biology at Villanova University, where he was a member of the Mendel Club and the Villanova Singers. Anthony continued his education in medicine at Georgetown University, graduating in 1971. He completed his residency at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and later practiced general and vascular surgery at Medstar Hospitals, where he served as Chief of Surgery at Harbor Hospital Center.
Upon retirement, Anthony found joy in sharing his knowledge as an exhibit guide at the Baltimore Aquarium. His diverse interests included skiing, tennis, golf, gardening, and sailing.
Anthony is survived by his daughters, Reagan Koffel and Kristin Nicolini, six grandchildren - Sutton, Campbell, Dyson, Quincy, Holton, and Peyton - and his sister, Stephanie McCormick. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Rosanne, and brother Paul.
Tony's Celebration of Life will be held at Sammy's Trattoria in Hunt Valley on Tuesday, January 16 from 5-7 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Raneri Family Women's Lacrosse Scholarship at Georgetown University or the Downtown Sailing Center.

One of the most amazing surgeons and kind-hearts of our time. Dr. Raneri saved my mother's life more than once. He will always have a special place in our hearts.

Tony, Michael Graham and I were surgical interns at U. Md '71. There was never a moment that Tony couldn't manage- from difficult medical stuff to awkward social events. His constant smile, his sense of positivity, his ability to see the glass half full are endearing. Condolences to his surviving family and friends.

I worked with "Dr.R" for 11 years. He taught me so much and I Soo enjoyed being part of his practice. We reconnected after he retired occasionally and I remember how contagious his smile was. I remember when he would take time off so he could take his small daughters sleigh riding and the stories he would share about them and the love he had for them.
I also remember the stories of his dad's bakery in NY and how to make goooood bread. Lol
"Dr.R", does heaven smell like fresh hot bread?
I miss u and remember you fondly.

I was designated to be Tony's official greeter so I met him when he moved into his apartment at The Lutheran Village at Millers Grant in Ellicott City. Tony quickly becaame admired and loved by the residents here that he met. Being so friendly, Tony was a perfect fit for our community. On his frequent long walks around our campus or in the hallways, Tony always had a warm greeting for everyone he encountered. He enjoyed participating in all sorts of social activities including membership in our community Chorus, "The Coffee Circle" , The Lunch Group, and membership in the Birthday Club. Tony was a very interesting conversationalist at our community's dining venues, the Bistro, The Pub, and Zest formal dining room. Tony was an enthusiastic participant in the Summer and Fall, 9-Ball Pool Tournaments where the other 31 players enjoyed his participation. On behalf of the 360+ resident members of Millers Grant, I can fervently say that we will miss his warmth, his kindness, his wit, and his friendship. God Bless our friend Tony. Our deepest sympathy to his family.

We were interns together at Maryland in 1971 and kept in touch occasionally. I was shocked when I called him this weekend and found out about his passing Terribly sad that my first friend as a doctor is gone I always think of him when I see a Fiat sports car as we both showed up in Baltimore with little yellow roadsters RIP my collegue of 53 years

I found it always good to see Tony down at the Downtown Sailing Center. I can't remember a time I didn't see Tony with a smile on his face. As a racer and an active member we'll miss him.

My deepest sympathies are being sent to Tony´s sister, daughters and grandchildren. Like many, I met Tony through DSC sailing and then more after sailing social events than can be counted. Tony was always up for a gathering, so as I was moving items to a new house on Montgomery, it shouldn´t have surprised me to find Tony sitting near my doorstep having drinks with my new neighbors. I´m not sure why that story jumps to mind, but I think it´s a good illustration of Tony´s outgoing and fun loving nature. But of all the things he loved, Tony loved his daughter´s above all. He talked with pride about you and I can only imagine how hard it was for him to leave you. Wishing you peace in the days ahead.

My first memory of Dr Raneri was in the operating room in 1993. The only thing I could see were his eyes and when he talked to me it was with a kind but strong voice!
He was fun to work with and so interesting to talk to!
He was an amazing Dr and nice person to call friend!

As a nurse at BWMC I had the privilege of working with Dr. Raneri. His smile was contagious and he shared his knowledge freely...I enjoyed hearing about his sailing adventures and days at the aquarium and always about his beautiful family....he touched so many lives and his abscence will be felt by many...I am truly sad to hear of his passing, my sincere condolences to his family and friends. When I first met Tony it was on the DSC docks. He asked me if I was taking care of Ebbe. I paused because I had no idea what he meant. Ebbe replied - No, she doesn't cook for me. We laughed hard. He and Ebbe have many sailing memories. Sending warm thoughts of comfort to all his loved ones.

I first met "Dr. Tony" in the late "90's and found he was both an active party host as well as attendee. The list included fireworks parties on the hill, block and blizzard parties on Montgomery Street, happy hours at the market, birthday bashes at his house and Little Italy, Halloween gatherings in Otterbein, football and baseball stadium events, Army-Navy post game celebrations, and so on. Besides his affinity for German built convertibles, he was also a charter member of a morning coffee group that circulated among Metro Cafe, Sam's Bagels, and lately Spoons, with an occasional jaunt out to Frederick Coffee Company in Frederick Maryland. Fun seemed to find our good friend and he generously shared the joy with us all. Rest easy and in peace, my friend!

I knew Tony through the racing program at the Downtown Sailing Center. He was a lovely man that was always a pleasure to be around. I was hosting an after race party at my home once and Tony showed up with this giant watermelon and asked for a knife. I gave him an appropriately large carving knife and then got nervous as I saw him sizing up the melon for cutting. Not knowing his day job at the time, I implored him to be careful using this big knife on a hard, round object. He turned to me with a twinkle in his eye and said, don't worry, I do this all the time, and then deftly dissected the watermelon, keeping all ten fingers intact. I was very saddened to hear of Tony Raneri´s passing. I knew him as we were
Colleagues at Harbor and BWMC hospitals. He was a kind, compassionate, and smart surgeon who I was always glad to run into on the floor or in the Drs Lounge so we could talk sailing or Lacrosse, when we had a few minutes.

Tony was a long time sailor at the Downtown Sailing Center in Baltimore. He was a great sailor, and just a great person to be with on a boat or around the docks. He was typical Tony: a big smile and a great volunteer who gave so much to the DSC Community. He regularly rolled up his sleeves to pitch in, opened up his big heart and his wallet as a donor to support the DSC's mission of making sailing accessible for everyone! His generosity benefitted so many. Everyone I know at the DSC loved sailing with him and just being around him. He made the DSC a better place -- and Baltimore a better City -- just by being involved! We will miss him. The entire DSC family extends its heartfelt condolences to his family.
