Anthony Susen Obituary
Age 87, of Burgess, VA, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Veil Susen, of Burgess, VA, one daughter; Barbara A. Susen of Biloxi, MS, a son; Paul A. Susan of Oakdale, CT; seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Dr. Susen graduated from Dartmouth College in 1942, and Harvard Medical School in 1945. He interrupted his education to serve for two years as a line officer in the United States Navy. In 1949 he spent six months on a wood hull sailboat mapping the Arctic Ocean on the Blue Dolphin Lab Expedition. Serving as a navigator, radio operator and ships doctor. His many pastimes included sailing and amateur radio. Dr. Susen began his practice in Pittsburgh, PA in 1953. He was the first pediatric neurosurgeon at Childrens Hospital and the only one between Chicago and New York at that time. He served as acting chairman of the Dept. of Neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh from 1966-1971. He was a member of the Academy of Neurological Surgeons. Dr. Susen retired from practice in 1991. The family will receive friends at FAULKNER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, Burgess, VA on Thursday April 10, 2008 from 10-11:00 am. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 am in the funeral home chapel. The family request that memorial contributions be made to the Northumberland County Rescue Squad, P.O. On Friday December 13,1957 DR.Susan removed a tumor off the optic nerve and saved my eye sight. I was 7 years old. Praise the Lord

Tony is greatly missed. I am so thankful that we were friends, as well as Pat, and that I was introduced to their grandson so long ago. What I would give to go back to that time.

Dr. Susan saved my brother’s life back in 1966
He was the 1st to perform surgery on an infant that needed a shunt to release water on the brain. I remember taking the 2 bus’s with my mom and baby brother to get to Oakland, once a month for years! I recall the hospital play area, too! As I got into preteens, I recall my parents saying oh we finally paid off children’s!

I just learned of Dr Susen's passing and offer my sympathy. Dr Susen operated my infant son Michael in 1957 for hydrocephaly. (Unfortunately, my son passed away a couple months before Dr Susen.) We had great respect and appreciation for the care Dr Susen gave my son and family, so much so that my husband painted a picture of your sailing ship as a gift. I understand your feelings at this time having lost my husband last year. May you find comfort in the memories you hold dear and the knowledge that your husband touched many lives.

I was sadden to hear of Dr. Susen's death. He did my spinal bifida surgery

I was sorry to hear recently that Dr. Susen passed. Dr. Susen removed a pituitary tumor from my brain in 1967 when I was in med school. I later rotated through neurosurgery and asked him to let me watch a similar procedure. I have been forever grateful for his skill and kindness. He was a great surgeon and a great teacher! I will miss him.

I was so sorry to hear of Dr. Susen 's passing. I was 15 and he did 2 of my back operations. Both at Childrens Hospital. I used to call him Ko Jack, because thats who he reminded me of. He was a great Dr. He will be sadly missed. I will keep him in my prayers.

W3AOH (Americas Oldest Ham) – Dr. Susan or Tony as know by his closer friends, was a member and a strong supporter of the Greater Pittsburgh VHF Society since he was a member in 1979. I have kept in touch with Tony when he moved away from Pittsburgh in the mid 80’s. Stopped and visited his various homes over the years and had bi-weekly phone conversations. When I would visit, we would just spend the whole day talking and enjoying each other’s company playing on the radios and computers. My favorite short story is when Tony, the dogs and myself were driving in his truck and he asked me why I called him “Tony”. I said that is your name isn’t it? He will be missed by the HAM community and all his friends.

To my Dad:
I will always remember to try to keep a stiff upper lip, never to cry when hit by a pitch, when in the rough to always pitch back to the fairway, never to wear shorts and only to wear short sleeve shirts when playing golf, that surgeons should wear bow ties, to keep my hair short, to know the difference between port and starboard, to master Morse code at an early age, to do my homework, to get good grades, to root for the Pirates, Panthers, Steelers and Arnie, to take care of Mother, to call my Sister, and to be patient - my time will come.
My Dad's time finally came. He has performed his last surgery, has walked off his last green, worn his last bow tie, made his last call as W3AOH, and sailed his last boat. My Dad left the world a better place in so many ways.
Thanks for every opportunity you provided for me and my family.
