Anthony Swinton Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Dec. 29 to Dec. 30, 2007.
Anthony Hans Swinton 1919 2007 Peacefully, with a full moon shining, Hans passed away at Marion Hospice during the early morning hours of December 24, 2007. He will be sorrowfully missed by Marcia, his loving wife of 56 years, his 3 three sons Paul (Korianne), Peter (Tina), Mark (Susi) and grandchildren Nicholas and Natalie. Hans was born in Vienna, Austria and immigrated to Canada in 1939 with his mother Elizabeth and brothers Kurt and George, all predeceased. He had many fond memories of his early years in Austria and never lost his love for his birthplace. Hans graduated from the first Faculty of Law class at the University of British Columbia in 1948. While there, he played on both the football and golf teams and was awarded big blocks with the entire golf team. Hans opened his first law office in 1948 practicing as a solicitor to small businesses. As time progressed, various lawyers joined and left the firm which changed, names several times before it became Swinton & Company in 1972. In 2000 the firm merged with Miller Thomson. Hans enjoyed practicing law for over 50 years and particularly treasured the interactions with his clients, partners, and employees. Hans was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for fishing, especially saltwater bucktailing, and bird hunting. Over the years he particularly enjoyed his relationship with his many dogs, and sharing dinners with family and friends to feast on the spoils. Hans was an enthusiastic golfer with a keen sense of the game. He started playing at 13 years of age, and played actively throughout Europe in amateur golf tournaments, and continued this in Canada. He served as Director of the British Columbia Golf Association for many years and was honored with a life Directorship. Hans was a member of Jericho Golf Club, Marine Drive Golf Club and Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club from 1958 until passing. Hans took a leading role in the development of Shaughnessy where he served as Director and then President in 1978. In his own words, ÃŽI had a lifelong love affair with the game of golfÃŽ. Hans's entire family shared his passion for fishing, bird hunting and golf throughout his life, and is thankful for the gentlemanly approach he took to these endeavours. The family would like to express our sincere appreciation to the doctors, nurses, social workers and employees at the Vancouver General Hospital and Marion Hospice for their kind and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. No service by Hans's request.

Hans was a great friend to golf and will be missed by all who knew him.
