Antoine PAQUIN Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Jun. 3, 2017.
PAQUIN, Antoine
December 29, 1966 - May 23, 2017
It is with profound sadness that we announce the untimely passing of Antoine Paquin.
Son of his loving parents Josette Perreault and the late Raymond Paquin; brother Patrice Paquin (Maryse Laflamme); nephew Alexis Paquin; and niece Florence Paquin. Survived by his devoted wife Kerry Pfahl; cherished sons Laurent (mother Caroline Leishman), Nicholas and Adrien; in-laws Kathryn and Edmund Pfahl; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Antoine was a great man with extraordinary vitality who exuded a unique personal charm. He was both a visionary and a man of action, fuelled by an entrepreneurial determination to change the world through the use of technology. He was highly respected by friends and colleagues, both inside and outside the tech community.
A true Renaissance man, Antoine's many interests included a deep appreciation of the arts, classic literature, science, capitalism, libertarianism, and an enduring belief in God and a higher power. His inspirations included Voltaire, Thomas Jefferson, Frédéric Bastiat, Eckhart Tolle, Roger Waters, Ron Paul, and local high tech mentor and friend, the late Adam Chowaniec. An accomplished athlete, Antoine excelled at gymnastics, skiing, cycling, running, and through his determination completed many triathlons, marathons, and even an Ironman. Antoine had an exceptional aptitude for languages, and attained functional fluency at a remarkable pace in Mandarin, Japanese, Spanish and German to go along with his French mother tongue, childhood Arabic and acquired English. A skilled musician, he was equally comfortable playing a concerto on his piano or strumming a rock ballad on his guitar. In recent years, Antoine developed a passion for nature, meditation, yoga and self-discovery.
Antoine was born in Montreal and spent his formative years in Quebec, Algeria and France, which helped shape his international and cultural outlook. A fervent believer in the enduring value of education, he attended Royal Military College, B.Sc.Eng (Physics); Carleton University, BA (Systems & Computer Engineering), University of California Irvine, MSc (Material Science & Engineering), and most recently the Université du Québec en Outaouais, MA (Maîtrise en gestion de projet), where Antoine was awarded the 2017 Grand Graduate Award in recognition of his distinguished career of excellence.
For more than twenty years, Antoine helped define and shape the direction of several notable and innovative technology firms and was the recipient of numerous industry awards and recognition. After launching his high-tech career at Bell Northern Research (Nortel Networks), Antoine co-founded Skystone Systems, Inc., the company with which he would achieve his first major success as CEO. Following the sale of Skystone to Cisco Systems in 1997, Antoine led a number of companies engaged in emerging technologies such as Bluetooth and GPS. These included Philsar Semiconductor Inc., BitFlash Inc., and Axiom Microdevices. As a partner at Rho Canada Ventures in Montreal, Antoine was instrumental in helping a new generation of entrepreneurs achieve their dreams. Most recently as founder and CEO of Solantro Semiconductor Inc., Antoine combined his expertise in semiconductors with the emerging field of alternate energy, and his team continues to pursue his vision.
Antoine lived life to the fullest with a deep devotion to his family. Always one to set his sights high and to place extraordinary demands on himself, in recent years he struggled with the burden of depression. In memory of Antoine, and in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health, Depression Research in support of this important initiative (http://www.theroyal.ca/foundation/antoine-paquin-memorial/ , ph: 613-722-6521). Thank you for your generous support.
Friends and family are invited to visit at Beechwood Cemetery and Funeral Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 5, 2017. A Memorial Service will be held in Beechwood's Sacred Space on Tuesday, June 6 at 11 a.m.

I am truly shocked at this loss of a entrepreneur's entrepreneur. So many creative and driven people walk that find line between projects. RIP Antoine. I offer my condolences to all family and friends.

Mes condoléances à toute la famille. J'ai rencontré Antoine lors de ma matrise en gestion de projets à l'université du Québec à Hull. Son père Raymond m'a enseigné. Antoine était vif, intelligent et très cultivé. Quelle perte. Mes pensées sont avec vous.

Kerry & Family;

Although we may not have spent an abundance of time with Antoine, we will fondly remember the visits and conversations we shared when visiting with our Mom in Ottawa throughout the years.

Antoine excelled in such varied areas of life and his accomplishments (both personal and professional) are impressive and inspiring. We will remember Antoine sharing his extensive wine and cognac collection at your delicious dinners and also our discussions about music (from classical to Radiohead), travel and life. Antoine was a natural at interacting with people and he conversed and shared his vast knowledge with ease; a quality that few possess. From seeing Antoine in his element at the office to rocking out with the boys playing Rock Band'; his love of life expanded throughout so many facets. Antoine was a genuine, caring person and he will be missed by so many.

We look forward to spending time with you the next time we visit Mom in Ottawa.

Heartfelt condolences from Newfoundland and Calgary,
Anita & Jason Ayling

Dear Kerry, Nicholas, Adrien and Laurent,

Please accept my deepest condolences.

Antoine was a light in my life. Together with Adam Chowaniec, Antoine was my mentor. It was an honor and a privilege to have known Antoine as a man, a friend, a confidant, a spiritual soul, a yoga partner, and a dynamic, daring entrepreneur like no other. He had a nickname for me: bello, and based on the theory that "Paquin" may have originated from the italian last name "Pasquini" he joked that we likely were related. That thought made me feel good. It was just Antoine's way of making me feel welcome, included and accepted, which he demonstrated over and over with anyone he met, regardless as to their nationality, calling, etc. Antoine spoke of you Kerry, and his "boys", with great admiration and love. I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of people I know that at the same time have such love for family and friends as for improving the lot of humanity. Over the last few weeks the memories have run like a movie in my mind: seeing him bound up the stairs at Solantro, his bright blue eyes, his warm smile, the quick hello as he passed by my office while running to a meeting, the one one one meetings on progress within the company, the suppers with Adam, and many many others, all now very much cherished and curated in my mind. I am a better person for having been graced by Antoine's presence. Both personally as well as professionally he taught me many live lessons, which I will hold onto and call on. He will live on forever in my life.

Warmest Regards,

I met Antoine when we were at university. He was one of the gang that hung out together at Carleton University. We enjoyed hiking and biking in the Gatineaus, hanging out, partying, and spending time at his uncle's cottage which, as I recall, was a very long hike through the woods from where you parked your car. Somehow, we always seemed to arrive at sun down and had to find our way in the dark, through the forest, with many trails leading in all directions, making many wrong turns, and getting completely lost. I remember it well. We always managed to find the cottage somehow and we have many happy memories there.

Even back then, though Antoine was just one of the gang, we were all a little in awe of him. He already stood out with his intellect, his diverse interests and his exceptional talents. My mother took a particular liking to him, as they both shared a love for religion and philosophy. She enjoyed challenging him and was bemused by his intelligence and earnestness in debate.

After University, we lost touch, as we all got busy raising our families and our lives took us in different directions. We spoke only once after that, when I called him to congratulate him on his success in business. He was happy to hear from me, and asked after my mother. We ended the call with the promise that we really have to get together again. I had always hoped one day, when things calmed down, we would. I am so sad to know this day will never come.

Kerry, Laurent, Nicholas and Adrien, may you find comfort in knowing that you had the privilege of loving a great man.

May you rest in peace in Heaven, Antoine. Our world is much poorer for your loss.

Dear Kerry , Nicholas, and Adrien,

I met Antoine in our second year of Engineering when he joined us from the Royal Military Academy. Our friendship was immediate! We became buddies from the first day: studying, joking, discussing God, the Universe , higher dimensioned Hilbert Space, and our shared passion for music. He being a devout Catholic, myself a religious Jew we could find both the contrasts and the parallels of Faith in God from different perspectives. On summer breaks, we hung out together, went on hikes around Lac Philippe, up to his uncle's cottage, and locally in the evening just for fun.

We had many long discussions about objectivism , Ayne Rand and libertarianism I still have his copy of The Fountainhead which I will return to you. He was always so fascinating to speak to, so intense. Everything he said was saturated with significance. He was always so much fun to be with, so profoundly and keenly vibrant and alive. I always felt there is so much to learn from him.

We didn't really keep in touch much over the years, he being busy with his many start-ups , and me being busy with mine (5 kids), but he was always there for me as the old buddy I would call whenever I returned to Ottawa.

It was so wonderful to meet up with him after so many years and meet you all. I was so happy to see him surrounded by such a beautiful family.

I was also so delighted when he reached out to me this last fall to discuss Faith in God, and a possible spiritual pilgrimage to Israel. Due to the High Holidays and time difference we never did have speak beyond some messaging, but I was so looking forward to walking up with him to the local monastery and introduce him to our kind neighbors the monks of Bet Jamal. How disappointed I was when in March he said plans for a trip were off.

I plan to mail you the book along with some soil from the Bet Jamal monastery - perhaps you can place some soil from the Holy Land on his final resting place. My eyes are brimming with tears as I write these words, am in disbelief and overcome with sadness.

Antoine was a very special friend at a very special period of my life. I'm so deeply shaken at his passing. I cannot begin to think what you must be going through. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Love Nili.

Dear Kerry, Nicholas, Adrien & Family

Antoine's passing provoked also in me a brutal low level in my energy, exactly the contrary of what he used to give me when spending time with him.

This low energy step a bit behind, I went through memories I have with him and you his family I know. Positive feelings and great moments that I'll never forget in California, Canada, Europe...

I wish you to find the right balance in your lives after his loss and know that our feelings are with you at this time.

My best feelings,

Dear Kerry, Nicholas and Adrien,
Deep sadness and an emptiness is with our family upon hearing of Antoine's passing. We have nothing but fond and loving memories of the times we have spent with Antoine, Kerry and the boys, watching our two families grow up together.
We find solace, Kerry, in knowing that the inner strength of the boys and the love you provide to your family will get you through this difficult time.
Antoine...I hope you have found the Peace and Liberty of which you so often spoke.

I am most grateful to Antoine for introducing me to one of his companies 10 years ago. I was most fortunate to be exposed to his thought leadership and to a couple board meetings (surfing) as it was called. Through his example Antoine gave me the feeling that a person can do anything they put their mind to. In Antoine's case that bar was set incredibly high.

My condolences to Antoine's loved ones, he will be missed.

Dear Antoine, we will miss you intensely. The light glows a bit dimmer now that you are gone. As a mentor, thank you for challenging me. Thank you for teaching me to think bigger and challenge the limits of my own consciousness. I recall each time we caught up - whether over dinner, or standup paddleboarding, surfing - you always shared how grateful you were for this life, and how lucky you are to have Kerry, Laurent, Adrian and Nicholas in your life. Your legacy lives on in so many ways. Goodbye my friend, Luke

Kerry & Boys,

it has taken a while for me to be able to express to you my sorrow for the passing of Antoine. There are so many ways in which i could describe Antoine all of which bring a smile to my face even in this time of deepest sorrow. i have had the pleasure of so many long and deep conversations with Antoine about so many diverse topics but will the deepest sincerity i can tell you nothing putting a smile on antoines face more than talking about his beloved family. Antoine had a certain smirk/grin that is etched in my memory forever and that look is how i will always remember him. My sister upon meeting Antoine for the first time described him as a Light and i have always thought that that description was so fitting on so many levels. i learned alot from Antoine and about antoine over a 20 year period but what i learned right from the beginning of our friendship was that he was a Good Human Being and a great role model for all.
He will be missed but he most certainly will never be forgotten.

Deepest Condolences,

Julie and I had the privilege of knowing Antoine and Kerry as neighbours and friends.

Even in those early days, you couldn't spend time with Antoine without being struck by his intellect, his wide-ranging interests, his energy and his enthusiasm. That remarkable mixture of personal qualities was at the core of this bold and brilliant entrepreneur.

Antoine remains one of those few people you meet in a lifetime whose extraordinary characteristics inspire others to use every ounce of their potential. If Canada had a hundred more people like Antoine, we would be fortunate, indeed.

Our hearts go out to Kerry and to all of Antoine's family, along with our thanks for having shared such an extraordinary person with us.

Your hearts must be very heavy, the loss of Antoine is a huge event for your family. I read his obituary carefully... Antoine was a complete scholar and an amazing human being I think, and the loss of someone who touches the lives of others in such a positive way is a loss to the human family as well as to your personal family. His beliefs will sustain his consciousness of course, as he finds himself back to the milieu from which he came and he will have found a wonderful welcome. It is you who are left behind to grieve him, that is the toughest part. With obviously so much to give to others, so much knowledge yet to impart, one could think this is such a great error, his leaving of this life. And yet we have to trust that life is moving as it should, that creative principle, no matter how you name it, is the author of the system that seems, eventually, to work things out very well indeed.

Still you will miss Antoine and grieve his loss. I feel very sad indeed for you and your family and I pray that you will be given the strength you need to cope with what you are facing. Many blessings.

Gabi + Hans-Peter

My condolences to Antoine's family for their sad loss. I only had the opportunity to meet Antoine a few times but when I did I was able to get a clear insight into his energy, drive and passion. However, for myself and for many others, we owe Antoine many, many thanks for what he did to the high-tech community in Ottawa and Canada. Antoine created so many opportunities for Canadians to compete in the global economy and he provided inspiration to others to try and do the same. There are not enough Canadians creating companies and jobs, and the drive and ability to do this multiple times is remarkable. To his family, please know that Antoine's impact and legacy will live on for a long time.

Shocked and very sad to learn of Antoine's passing. I was so fortunate to have worked with Antoine at Philsar and to have had him as an investor and mentor at GridIron. Sherry and I also enjoyed Antoine and Kerry's gracious hospitality at home. Perhaps my best memories of him are of biking the roads and trails of Gatineau Park, or running along the Rideau Canal near Hogsback. Go easy, my brother!

I am honored to have had the limited acquaintance of Antoine, who I've cited as inspirational for his vision, drive, and success. His passing has shocked me, and I'm selfish in the sadness that I will no longer be graced by encounters with him. My heart goes to his wonderful family and friends who will forever endure a great loss.

Dear Kerry and family. I was truly shocked to hear of Antoine's passing. As you may recall, I got to know and immensely admire Antoine in early 2000 and beyond when he and I would business gather at TD Private Banking. He was a true professional.
Please accept my sincerest condolences.

Antoine was one of the few real visionaries I have ever met. He had enthusiasm, energy, drive and determination. He was the anti-engineer, he saw possibility when the rest could only see risk, he had certainty when the rest of us only had doubts. It was a great privilege to work for him and I will miss him.

Antoine made enormous contributions to the Ottawa tech community through his many successes - literally putting Ottawa on the map for much needed venture capital to fuel other startups - and for the insightful guidance he gave that always seemed wise beyond his age.
He will be missed.
