To the Starkey family,
Tony earned the respect of everyone who met him. I had the privilege of meeting Tony in 1975 when I started working at the Welfare Dept. Once being a student at Calumet myself, (same time as Paul) Tony and I started talking a lot. I loved hearing his stories of being a bus driver for the school, his Scouting experiences, his family, and "Mama" whom he adored. His writings in the DPWette often brought laughter as well as a lump in the throat. His craftmanship furnished the Welfare Dept. We were all a little upset when some of those things started disappearing during "modernization". However, many of his projects, such as mail bins, are still being utilized today. I can still see Tony calling bingo at Blessed Sacrament, urging him to call "my number". Even though I haven't physically seen Tony since his retirement party, I can still see his warm smile and the twinkle in his eyes. We're all very fortunate to have known him. God bless all of you and be with you now and in the future.

Dad,

Last Thursday was one of the worse and hardest days of my life; I lost my father and best friend. How can I ever begin to thank you for being the BEST father a son could ever ask for? You were more than my dad; you were my teacher, coach, confidant, mentor, and my best friend. I will always cherish the memories you have given me throughout my life. When I was young, you always made sure my brothers and sisters and I, as well as mom, had a vacation somewhere, be it a trip around Lake Michigan (I can still close my eyes and envision myself standing on the front seat of the car between you and mom, I was 5 yrs old, while Toni, Jimmy, and Patti were in the back seat) or out east, or just a lazy week at a rented cabin in Monticello.

Thank you for instilling in me a strong belief in God and my Catholic religion, and a love for my country (even though I don't agree with everything the government does!) Thanks for getting me involved in the Boy Scouts, a time in my life I will always remember (forgetting my silverware on camp outs and having to find you at your camp and take yours - how did you eat your food?)
I will cherish all of our confidential talks, times when I was feeling down and you spoke some sense into me and brightened my day. Thank you (and mom) for being my right and left hands when I was in my auto accident in 1971 and was laid up in bed for 3 1/2 months. I know that it was not easy for either of you to see me that way. I hope that I have made you proud as your son - I tried to do what you and mom always taught me. I am proud to be a Starkey - to me, the BEST family on the earth. I guess you have to be a Starkey, or related to one, to know and understand the special bond and closeness we have for one another.

Dad, even though you are not here with us physically, you will always be in my heart, on my mind, and in my prayers. I will try my best to continue to make you and mom proud of me. I know when you left us, mom, grandma & grandpa Starkey, Toni Marie, Uncle Joe, Aunt Elsie, Uncel Butch, Larry and all of our deceased relatives where waiting at heavens gate with open arms and smiles on their faces. You are with mom again, the love of your life.

Please ask Jesus to give Toni, Jim, Patti, Mary Ann, Butch, myself and all of us the strength to make it through the next few days, as well as the coming weeks, months, and years.

I love you dad - rest in peace.

Tony was a great person and full of knowledge and kindness. I worked with him at the Welfare Department from 1954 until he retired. Having a holiday lunch with him, Kathy and other retirees was always a pleasure.

Be Blessed

To the Starkey family
My sympathies go out to you at this time of Tony's passing. I started working at the welfare department in 1974 (and still work there). Tony was awesome to work with. He would always find a way to make things better in our office. Not only his superior craftsmanship, but also his positive attitude (and sense of humor). He could converse with anyone with ease, whether the talk was simplistic or highly intellectual. Also, many of the fixtures he created are still in use, even though our office has moved a few times. Everyone truly missed him when he left the department in 1991. There will never be another one like "Tony". My prayers are with the family at this time of your loss.

Dad,

I just want to say "thank-you" for being the BEST father a son could ever want. Thank you for being the best role model around; because of you and mom, I have a strong faith and belief in God. I am blessed to be in the greatest family on earth. My family means everything to me. Thank you for always being there when I needed someone to talk to or confide in. Thanks for all you have taught me and always encouraging me to do my best in life. I know you are at peace in heaven with our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. I can see mom, your mom and dad, Aunt Elsie, Uncle Joe, Toni Marie, Uncle Butch, Larry, and all of our deceased relatives waiting for you and welcoming you with open arms into heaven. Words cannot describe how much you meant to me and how much I am going to miss you. I know things were hard for you after mom passed away; after almost 60 years of marriage, it had to be hard. I will never forget and will cherish forever our trips to the doctor and a nice lunch/dinner and conversation afterwards. Or, just getting together to visit and talk. You were always interested to find out what was going on in my life, as well as my sisters and brothers, Toni, Jim, Pat, Mary Ann and Butch. Unless you are a Starkey, one can never realize the tight bond that keeps us close and together. Many times throughout my life, I was told by friends that they envy me because of the best mom and dad and family I had.

Rest in peace dad, I love you. You will always be on my mind, in my heart and in my prayers. I know one day we will be together again. Please ask Jesus to give all of us the strength we need to get through the next few days and the coming weeks, months, and years.
