Judy,Chris,
I was very sad to hear of the passing of Archie.
I will never forget the times that Anthony and I had with Archie , He was always a positive force in our young lives and we always had a good time when me Chris and Anthony would get together there at the house on Redbud.
My thoughts and prayers are with you both .

I'm terribly saddened to hear of Archie's passing. He was an occasional contributor to Journal of the West, and a respected colleague. My condolences to his family, friends, and departmental colleagues.

Judy and Family: I had been having E.S.P. messages that I ignored until this past weekend when I finally sent an email to Archie. Today I received a response from his office telling me of his death and directing me to the Sentinel Obituary.

I am Clarice Fortgang Pollard's daughter, Avie Kalker. Clarice died on December 24, 2007. I realized that I had not told the "History guys", so I emailed.

So, if Clarice were here, she would be calling. I know that she considered Archie a "fast" friend or as they say now a sort of "BFF". The letters they exchanged proved that. Besides, they could laugh about things together. Archie encouraged Mom to keep writing and to market herself and her book as well as attend whatever Symposium Archie (or Bobby Johnson) were running about World War II.

Thank goodness Archie left behind a pile of literature! It will help him to live forever in the hearts and minds of those who knew him and those who will come to know him.

My deepest sympathy to the McDonald family from "just a listener" on Red River Radio. I have followed Archie's commentaries for awhile and appreciate what a selfless, dedicated, and marvelous teacher he was. His legacy will go on in all those whose lives he touched.

I tuned in to NPR radio this morning, I always listen around 7:20 in the morning while taking the kids to school. I knew Dr. McDonald had been ill, but did not realize gone. I will surely miss hearing him. I always enjoyed his commentaries. My heartfelt condolences.

Archie McDonald was a great historian, a great friend and and even great Teacher. I enjoyed being his GA and his driver to so many events. I was truly blessed with his friendship and I will miss our talks. May GOD be with Judy, Chris and Kelly.

Words can't express the sense of personal grief I feel at the loss of this great man. What a treasure he was, for SFA, for Nacogdoches, and for all of East Texas. Judy, you and your sons are in my prayers and have my most heartfelt sympathy. He was a great man, full of wit, charm, and erudition. There is a huge hole in our hearts and a deep sense of sadness. I weep with you.

Dr. McDonald was one of my professors back in the mid 70s. The fact that I still remember him vividly speaks volumes about the kind of man he was - and the kind of educator. I will never forget him, which is incredible considering that I remember very few of my professors. He was a very special man. My prayers are with the family during this time of loss.

Dear Judy, Haskell and I are deeply saddened by Archie's death. Since 1958, we have thought of the two of you as dear friends, whom we have seen far too seldom, but have always held close to our hearts. Archie truly reflected all of the "best of Texas" in every aspect of his life. Our loving tthoughts and prayers are with you and all of your family. Jo

Judy and Chris, Dale and I were so sad to hear of Archie's passing. Somehow it seemed like he often sat behind us in church, and I can still remember his voice, as he belted out those favorite hymns we all love so much. He was a great man who will be sorely missed by all of us. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you tomorrow and in the days to come.

A learned man. A great writer and speaker. A loyal husband. A fan of SFA and LSU sports. We will miss you, Dr. McDonald. Thank you for making Nacogdoches a special place. Prayers for Judy and Chris as they mourn the loss of a husband and father.

Even though we both worked as faculty members at SFA, our paths rarely crossed, but when they did, Archie was a totally supportive colleague. He expressed strong support for me after the passing of Bill Brophy when I had the opportunity to direct the Academic Enrichment Center, now the Brophy Center (the program founded by his close friend, Bill Brophy). I always admired Archie's pioneering work in community engagement where he was able to effectively communicate a historical & scholarly perspective to the public through venues such as Red River Radio & the East TX Historical Assoc.
My prayers are with the McDonald - may you experience the "best of times at the worst of times" as you remember Archie's life & his impact on so many he touched.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Archie. He was a great history professor, directed my Master's thesis, and wrote the forward to my book. He was tireless in his efforts to serve his community and his students. His death leaves a void at SFA and Nacogdoches that can never be filled. The torch has been passed. Those of us who were touched by Archie must pick it up and carry it forward.
