Arlie Matthews Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 3, 2025.
Arlie Buster "Junior" Matthews, age 80, passed away on March 18, 2025, in Beaumont, California. A proud veteran, devoted father, and beloved patriarch, Arlie's life was marked by service, adventure, and deep love for his family and country.

Born on August 29, 1944, in Fort Worth, Texas, Arlie was raised in a Pentecostal home where faith played a central role. Weekly church services were a cornerstone of his upbringing, instilling in him a lifelong respect for the power of prayer and the strength of community. His spiritual foundation remained with him throughout his life.

Arlie graduated from Chaffey High School in 1962 and went on to pursue higher education at Chaffey College, Chico State, and Cal Poly. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Business-a fitting credential for a man whose career would span both aviation and real estate.

His military journey began with the United States Marine Corps before transitioning to the Army as a helicopter pilot. Arlie served with distinction in Vietnam as part of the 1st Cavalry Division and flew missions with the 101st Airborne Division and the 82nd Avn. After sustaining injuries during his tour, he retired medically but continued to serve proudly in the Reserves. His dedication to his fellow servicemen and women never wavered; he held deep admiration for his brothers and sisters in arms.

Following his military service, Arlie brought his skills to civilian life as a helicopter pilot for commercial real estate brokers during the late 1970s. His passion for real estate grew over time-he became a Title Representative and later partnered with friends and colleagues to invest in land development projects across Central California. Among their ventures were apartment buildings and the restoration of an old motel.

One of Arlie's greatest joys came when he welcomed his daughter Jennifer into the title business. The two worked side by side for twelve years until the market downturn in 2007. Their time together professionally was filled with laughter and camaraderie-memories that Jennifer will always treasure.

Arlie took immense pride in his family. He is survived by his daughter Jennifer; five grandchildren: Jessica, Joshua, Alyssa, Josiah, and Elizabeth; and eight great-grandchildren who brought him endless joy. To them-and to all who knew him-he was not only a father or grandfather but also a hero whose stories inspired generations.

10 years ago Arlie was certified with a service dog named Camo as a service team through an organization in Rockwall Texas called Patriot Paws.

Camo was not just Arlie's service dog. He was family, his best friend, and was looked at as another one of their family heroes. They were a great team.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arlie and Camille Matthews, as well as his sister Yvonne Stroh.

Beyond work and family life, Arlie remained active in various organizations including the American Legion, The Helicopter Pilots Association, ROA (Reserve Officers Association), and Veterans Affairs groups. He loved traveling with friends and family-always eager to explore new places while sharing stories from both his military days and personal adventures.

A memorial gathering to honor Arlie's life will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Solara Oaks Club House located at 1550 Fairway Dr., Beaumont, California 92223.

Arlie Buster "Junior" Matthews lived a full life defined by courage, commitment, faith, and love. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire all who carry forward his legacy.

Grief is one of the most difficult things to experience but the love and memories we all share with my dad helps us get through. My son Josiah and my daughter Elizabeth were close at hand with the adventures. As most know dad could not sit still for very long. He was always ready fir the next adventure, whether it be an hour or two driving through the local hills or a bit of a longer road trip that would take us cross country. These trips just won't be the same without you pops. I love you, I miss you, and when I close my eyes thinking about you I see you, Camo, and your other pookers running around, playing fetch.
Clear right, clear left. Over and out.
