Arline Melhus Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 7, 2019.
Arline Marjorie (Weik) Melhus, 97, of Tampa, passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at peace with family by her side at Brookdale Senior Living in Tampa, FL. Arline was born December 7, 1921 in Pelican Rapids MN, to Oscar & Josephine (Granrud) Weik. She graduated from Pelican Rapids High School, was Miss Pelican Rapids in 1938, and studied to become a beautician.

She worked with her mother, Josie, and her brother, Gilmore Weik, at Weik's Beauty Shop in Pelican Rapids. It was in Pelican Rapids where she met and married her high school sweetheart, Arne Melhus. They were married August 15, 1943 in Moorhead, MN. They moved to Fargo, where they built their home and raised their family. They also purchased lake property in Minnesota, where they built a cottage and had many friends around the lake.

Arline & Arne traveled with the family, and had many friends wherever they visited. They were members of the Lutheran Church, and were members of a potluck with other patrons of the church that met for over 45 years. They moved to Bradenton to retire in the early 1980s, just minutes from the beach, where they had many get-togethers with their 'Beach Bunch'.

After Arne's passing in 1989, Arline continued to reside in Bradenton until 2015, when she moved to Tampa to be closer to family at Brookdale Senior Living. She gained even more friends at Brookdale, as she was known to do everywhere she went.

Arline loved music, art, dancing, and singing. She sang with Sweet Adeline's group, and was an accomplished artist. She worked with ceramics, and in the 1980s became a painter. Arline was always very positive & pleasant, and very eager to communicate with anyone and everyone. She remained full of energy and a love for life until her final day.

She leaves behind a son, Gregory (Bobbie) of Manteca, CA; daughter Julie (Storm) of Tampa; her grandchildren, Troy, Teresa, Raven, Blaise, Sean, Danna; her great-grandchildren; and her many friends she made throughout her life.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation in Arline's name.

Arlene was my Aunt. She was always laughing and giggling. She had an infectious smile. We used to spend time at the lake with Arlene & Arne. She would wash her hair in the lake which I always thought was very funny. She was loving and very fun!!

What a dear person was Arline! I'm so grateful she was my next-door neighbor's best friend. Butchie Muscatell introduced me to Arline shortly after we moved to Florida in 1987, and our friendship flourished since then. She was so kind to our children and particularly encouraged me as my mother was terminally ill. ....Only a few of us know how she got the nickname, "Girl of the Streets"....I can just hear her melodically giggle as I write this. ...Many times after dinner and chores around our houses were completed, Butchie and I would call Arline to ask her if she wanted to join us with a raspberry milkshake at Shake Pit. "Sure thing," Arline would say. "I'll meet you on the street." And surely enough, as Butchie and I rounded the corner, there with a beautiful smile on her face would be Arline, standing in the driveway, ready to jump in the car. So we named her our favorite Girl of the Streets.
And how fortunate I was to be invited to celebrate her birthday through the years. The parties would begin December 7th and were known to continue right up until December 25th. She would giggle and say, "That's a much bigger birthday, you know."
R.I.P., Arline.... We love you.
