Arlyne Elliott Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 20, 2022.
Beautiful and vibrant Arlyne Brenda Elliott born on 9/11/1941, grew up in Brooklyn, New York with her sister Karen. She dreamed of moving to California and followed through on this goal after graduating from Boston University. She worked as a model and waitress and saved enough money for a one way plane ticket (with $20.00 in her pocket) and was on her way. Arlyne married and taught elementary school in the inner city of Los Angeles and while she loved teaching - she visualized turning her creative side into a second career. She enrolled at UCLA extension for Interior Design and started her own business - reimagining hotel lobbies, homes and office spaces. She never retired as she loved her craft so much. Additionally, Arlyne volunteered and donated to organizations focused on children and the arts (volunteering at the Getty Museum) throughout her adult life.

Arlyne loved life and had many friends. She was inclusive and never met a stranger; every new acquaintance was a potential friend. Her calendar was full of activities as she was always ready to seize the day and have a good time. She enjoyed the movies, live theater, museums, traveling with friends and family, entertaining and attending parties. Plus, watching her favorite shows Jeopardy, Forensic Files and the Academy Awards. Arlyne also looked forward to her hair appointments, manicures and dressing up for everything.

Arlyne was intelligent, generous, kind, stylish, fun and funny and enjoyed discussing world events - the juicier the better. She wore memorable accessories like hats, big earrings and bright scarves easily and was not afraid of going extra bold. Yellow was her favorite color.

Arlyne was especially proud of her two daughters and over the moon to be an "AMA" to her treasured grandchildren (since 2004). Living in different cities, Arlyne learned to use her iPhone so she could stay connected to them all via facetime, text and email - every single day. She was especially grateful to the late Steve Jobs for this new technology and said so often.

Arlyne, age 80, passed away peacefully on 4/17/2022 after being diagnosed with an aggressive cancer earlier this month. She is survived by her two daughters Rachel Elliott, Jessica Diaz (Frank) and grandchildren Priscilla and Brandon. She will be greatly missed by her friends, extended family, neighbors, and close acquaintances.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Make-A-Wish (wish.org) or Teen Line (teenlineonline.org/supporters) in honor of our mom Arlyne. She passionately helped these two organizations to support children.

Memories of Arlyne come back to me often in the form of what she would say, do, and especially what she loved. I finally tried her favorite coffee: Peets Coffee and I love it too. It tastes velvety. I believe she knows that I am sending her love and appreciation. Our loved ones are with us especially when we think of them (for no reason).

I am re-watching a movie that Arlyne once suggested to me: Maudie. It stars Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke. She really enjoyed it. Watching it makes me think of Arlyne and what touched her. Perhaps you might enjoy getting a copy of it and seeing the beauty in this movie for yourself.

I now have a Jewish Fiance and how I wish I could talk to Arlyne about it! The insight she would have, has always had. One of the best things Arlyne ever shared with me is her ability and interest in investing. One day back in the 1980's or 90's...she called me and told me to buy Apple stock. She was so sure and it felt like a smart thing to do. So I did and the rest is history. She got me on a solid footing and I learned from there, like a big sister would do.

I think of her and her memory - or possibly her spirit, joins me on my walks. It is always light and happy and reassuring. And it gives me faith.

I am missing Arlyne and her ideas, thoughts and conversation, especially her recommendations for good books to read. I thought I would write some here that she recommended and perhaps if her other friends saw this and could also add to the list books she loved, it would keep her in our thoughts.

Here are 3:
The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
The Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton
No One Will Tell You this but Me by Bess Kalb. (She really loved that book.)

Arlyne was a wonderful Make-A-Wish Foundation of Los Angeles volunteer, a great walking partner, and friend. She was interesting, kind, funny, and talented. For over 20 years, Arlyne kept me up to date on her daughters and grandchildren through letters she wrote in beautiful penmanship. I will miss her dearly.

I´m so sorry for your loss. My late husband, Marty, and Your mom were cousins. I met her at her dad´s 80th birthday and we bonded instantly. We´ve stayed in touch all these years, so I was stunned when I reached you Jessica...I was just calling to check in.
Your mom was kind and strong and loved you all so very much. I will miss her. ellen

Arlyne was definitely one of the kind!
The obituary truly honors who she was. Arlyne´s favorite berry was blueberry, and she loved to spend time at the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine. This is how my family and I wish to remember her always happy!
We keep her love in a photograph where our eyes are never closing! May she rest in paradise.

I was so sad to hear of her passing, and how fast it happened. We were just planning a luncheon together. Arlyne was one of the most unique snd warmest people I have ever met. I will miss her so much.

I moved to LA from New York in 2014, overwhelmed by culture shock and knowing only one person in the whole town, and immediately found my home in one of Arlyne's darling bungalows. She embraced me immediately-- both literally and figuratively. Most people's relationships with their landlords are transactional at best (and acrimonious at worst), but I have absolutely loved being her tenant. It was always a hoot when she would drop by-- we would chat about the Getty, or hairstyles, or anything that amused us. She brought treats and sweet notes for every holiday, and we always felt valued and appreciated. It has truly been a pleasure to know her, and I will always be grateful for the wonderful home that she gave me in los Angeles.

Arlyne was a friend for a good 25 years. We met in O'Hare airport when she took a trip by herself to tour the art museums in Chicago. We consulted each other advice, astrological transits, interior design ideas, what to do in our love life. She was like a sister. Her voice echo's within me. The pain she felt at the end apparently was that cancer and I am so glad that she is free of it. Relationships are forever and I know I will see her again. Condolences to her family whom she held so dear. Love you, Arlyne.

We met at the school our daughters attended. We became instant family. Arlyne was the sister I always wanted and never had. There was nothing we left unsaid in the minefield of our lives.we supported each other through some of the most difficult times of our lives.complete trust and deep understanding we´re the building blocks. Arlyne was warm and classy and definitely irreplaceable. New friends are great but old friends are a gift from God. Arlyne was the gift in mine.I miss her to the very core of my being.

First, I was in shock at how quickly everything happened. Now, the grief is setting in and only subsides when I think of some of our fondest memories and all the little things I miss daily about you....starting the day with an email to decide when we can talk before the day begins, playing Jeopardy each night together by phone, miss our talks about Megan Markle, Amy and Matt from Jeopardy, sharing about our grandchildren. I miss her smile, her goodness, her rants about her computer or TV not working, only to find out the plug wasn´t in. I miss us talking about our day. I miss, I miss, I miss...so much about you and hope you knew how much I loved you.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Arlyne whom I cherished as a dear friend from the day we first met at the Beverly Hills Country Club in the 80´s.
We travelled together with my daughter, Ashli Shapiro, to NYC , where we laughter for many years over a homeless man referring to us as "Charlie´s Angels" as we ran across 5th Avenue. We bought hats to wear to the Russian Tea Room ... everything was a kick with Arlyne! We flew to Turkey where the fun and adventure continued as we cruised the Mediterranean. I have 30+ years of beautiful memories with Arlyne.
My heart is shattered.
