Hi, dear family of Dr. Arnall Patz. I am a survivor of retrolental fibroplasia, and I just wanted to remember fondly and with gratitude, your wonderful father and husband,
Ms. Ellen. I do not know whether my eyesight was kept in tact specificallly because of his research. But, it may have been. My own father, Harold Rosenbaum, was a physician, in Boston, in 1950, when my twin sister, Paula, and I were born prematurely and placed in 100% oxgen. Our parents were told that we both were to be blind. But, my Dad,
Dr. Rosenbaum, had the doctors give us steroids; and by some miracle of God, and the help of the steroids, perhaps, neither of us are totally blind. In fact, we both have good vision in one of our eyes. But, because your husband, Ms. Ellen, and your father would not be stopped by the "nay sayers" who would not believe that the 100% oxygen was causing blindness, I wanted to stand in the place of all those 1000's of babies, now adults, who have the gift of their eye sight, due to your husband and dad's perseverence and research! May we learn from him not to give up too easily when we feel we are on to a cure or benefit, when others try to convince us we are wasting our time. We honor him and hold affection for him and you all. May you all find a measure of comfort knowing his life's work helped so many, along with his laser work that spared many from blindness due to complications of diabetes and macular degeneration! Bless you all! Sincerely, Nancy Rosenbaum Jones, from Danville, KY.

What a wonderful man to have known. There was never a time that he was too busy to say hello even to "the little guy" sitting at the front desk.
In his unique way, as only Dr.Patz could, he would say, "greetings" followed by the small flash of a smile. He was always one of my favorites. May his friends and family take comfort in their cherished memories of him.

The Board of Directors and Staff of the Maryland Society for Sight extends condolences to the Patz family. Dr. Patz is such a part of our history, having served on the Board of Directors and as President of the Board. We were honored by his accepting our "Person of Vision" award in 2004. His book, "Protection of Vision in Children" sits proudly on our shelf and we often refer to its contents regarding saving sight in children. What a truly remarkable man.

My sister and I were patients of Dr. Patz in the 1960s. We have very fond memories of him and we always bragged to our friends that our eye doctor knew Helen Keller. He was such a caring doctor and knew how to talk to children, not talk down to them. He was a role model.

He was a wonderful man, Ellen. Our absent-minded professor on the golf course. He often wanted to know where my shot went---but I hadn't hit yet. We loved him.

Dear Ellen and family, Just wanted to tell you that when I put Arnall's accomplishments on my facebook page I had a friend who said her granddaughter was premature. She couldn't believe Arnall was part of saving her granddaughter's eyesight. Thank you Arnall, what a small world it is and how he has touched so many. Love you, Jane Snodgrass (Lathrop, MO)
